Missing/hesitating at partial throttle, great at WOT!
Hi, some of you may remember the 79 5 speed I bought on holiday in France. Sorry not to update the story..but I am busy at work and spending all my spare time fixing it!
The main issue is per title. Starts ok, idles ok, pulls really strong, sounds great and ‘feels happy’ on hard acceleration. BUT on low rev application, gentle town driving etc, it hesitates and bucks like I am lugging it (which I am not)..so I always need a higher gear to keep the revs up so it will pull, or I coast in neutral just to stop the juddering. If it was on a race track there would be no problem!
Information is that the car was unloved but had no issues like this when I drove it the length of France. It has since had plugs, leads, rotor, cap, fuel filter, in-tank injector cleaner, and full clutch job. I checked vacuum lines visually and replaced a couple that were cracking. It has a replacement used WUR, as it would flare and die for the first half dozen key turns (the old one was also clogged at the inlet screen with fine wood-like material but still wouldnt work when cleaned up).
I dont have access to a local 928 mechanic sadly. The car had a recent emissions test which needed some revs to pass. The guy thought it was running rich, but I have pulled spark plugs and they look perfect in terms of colour.
So, I wondered if the fact that the car idles well and has plenty of go on open throttle rules out vacuum leaks, blocked filters or injectors etc.? It doesnt feel like the clutch is slipping..(wondered about oil contamination as the car does leak oil).
I think my next step is colortune, just so I can confirm my ratios arent way out, confirm basic functioning of each cylinder. After this, find someone to check the CIS fuel pressures...throttle cable adjustment?
any other suggestions or thoughts about cause? Merci, mes amis..
