Default WHAT IS THIS CANISTER

Hello everyone I was looking around under the hood of my !981 Euro 5 speed today and noticed this canister with what looks like vacuum lines coming off of it. This is mounted under the fender next to the headlight kind of hidden up there and I never noticed it before. One of the lines exits to where the picture shows the un connected hose the other I haven't figured out yet any ideas?

It looks like a very haphazardly installed charcoal canister. It was required to federalize the car and it is hooked up to the fuel tank vent line and then to the intake to vent the tank and be EPA friendly.

You can remove it or leave it in place if it isn't interfering with anything. The car will pass smog so long as the canister is present, but I highly doubt it is doing anything.

I think they installed it there just so they could say it was there when the car was federalised but it doesn't actually do anything.

As for my engine it hasn't gone anywhere aside from getting the pan on finally. I need to order all the gaskets and engine mounts which is going to hurt $$$.

So in the mean time I've been doing work on my dad's 944 on his coin. It's his car after all

The car itself is at the body shop having its frame straightened and having its front end painted. Gotta wait to paint the rear when I have more money lol.
