Default Mystery door lights?

while working in the doors I could these lights tucked down inside the door. Pretty badly rusted. One bulb is gone and one is burned out.

where are they supposed to go?

Are those the red lights on the outside of the door edge, just below the latch mechanism? Little square red ones on my 82...I’ll grab a pic if you need one...

I think Ron's got it. Water cap for the lights just below the latch. #6 in the PET, mounting into Part F in the door frame.

Just buy 2 new lamp assemblies and make sure they come with new bulbs they are sort of special .

once the parts are in your hand,
clean the old terminals with deoxit and a wire brush.

plug them in,
then slide the rubber boot onto the rear of the lamp,
then get some RTV silicone and put a dab of RTV into and around the hole /and wires ,where the wires come out at the rear of the boot opening ,
let it cure,
this will prevent the lamps from filling with water .

Default Winner winner chicken dinner!

Ron got it first! When I went in to begin the removal of the broken inner door handle, I noticed the fitting these lights plug in to in the door frame that light up when it opens.

thanks Stan for the advice on replacement - will pop a couple of LEDs in there and won’t have to worry about sealing them in.

I think you will,
the water will run down the wires and fill the back of the lamp,
put some silicone into the hole and around the wires where the wires come out of the rubber boot,
this will prevent the damage you found

Default Oops!

Either I mistyped or autocorrect got me...

stan I meant to put LEDs in and then seal the backside as you mentioned with silicone to prevent water entry!

NOTE disconnect the battery or you will usually blow the fuse while making repairs

Default Follow-up

Went a little different route with this project as I had 'stuff' on hand that I thought might work. See the photos below for my fix.

My original sockets had rusted the lamp onto the socket and on the driver's door one of the terminals had rusted through and broken off

Shot

Here is the red lens removed from the door.

These little bayonet sockets are all over the place in the pinball machines I restore - had a bunch on hand

Wrapped with electrical tape to build up the outside diameter

Trimmed the tape to the edge of the socket itself

Inside view

Nice snug fit of new socket into lens assembly

Testing with an incandescent bulb from Advance Auto. I bent the terminals up so that the boot would fit. New heat shrink terminals on the wires

Realized I also had LEDs from pinball repairs

LED installed

Installed in the car.

No pics of the final install from inside the door, but the rubber boot slipped on nicely and then I put a dab of RTV on the wire feed through to keep water out.

FWIW, the red lens will pop out of the black surround so you can properly clean it.
