Help removing oil filler assembly on 79
Hi folks, my 79 euro has ‘oil in the valley’ and so far from inspection and a search here I suspect the gasket at the base of the filler. I am in the process of dismantling and am confused - PET shows one 10mm bolt on one side but I can’t see how it fastens on the other side? It looks like a return pipe curves down and away but surely that isnt securing the filler by itself? Thanks in advance..

take off the top of the oil filler,
then remove the screen....
BOOM you will see the screw.
Use a magnet to remove the screw and washer.
NOTE the water bridge may have to be removed to remove the oil filler as the return tube passes under the WB.
I use Dreibond to reseal the fill tube to the block

Boom, thar she blows!
Any advice on removing the water bridge before I start loosening stuff? It does look like I will need to do this too. Am I going to get coolant eveywhere?

Ok, just searched up water bridge removal. Maybe I want to avoid that if I can..
The oil filler is so close to coming out as it is now, I assume it is possible eventually.

try it see if she comes out. If not drain the block ,
you know what you have to do.

Ok, thanks. It is not coming out, so plan C might be to do my best to clean the mating surfaces and slide in a new gasket in situ, with a little instant gasket and see what happens. There doesnt appear to be any gasket there at all right now, is that normal for OBs?
Also thought about installing a flat baffle such as the 928MS one, but I dont think these reduce oil filler leaks? My airfilter housing is always pretty oily though..these baffles are A Good Thing for old 928s regardless I think?

I used the Greg Brown baffle with success on my 81. Seal it to the block using dreibond or any other anaerobic sealant and use a standard paper gasket on top.
It's worth doing while the filler assembly is off.
The water bridge however is a pain. I recommend using lots of heat on those bolts to break any corrosion. And then using new bolts as well.

NOTE when removing bolts with heat on the 928 block,
your attempt to remove hardware from the block will be greatly improved if you drain the block first.
Otherwise the applied heat will be dissipated so fast it will seem like it was never applied.
This is primarily for water bridge and water pump bolts
