No Start Issue 81 928 S
So guys I have been trying to ressurect an 81 928 S Euro. I killed alot of cars in my youth so it is time to save a few. I bought a 928 S Euro model about a year ago. It was low mileage 64K and had sat for about 24 years.......body was in great shape and it ran Ok, but needed some love. Changed plugs, oil, filter and all the belts and then also the trans fluid.......It had a hard start issue after warm and I found that the fuel accumulator was rotten, so it was replaced and fuel filter was also replaced etc. I got tied up on some other projects and went back to her recently and it wouldnt start and I couldnt hear the fuel pump. I thought that was the issue and had had some issues with the fuel pump relay and replaced that in the past. So I jumpered the 87 and 30 pins on the fuel pump relay, which in the past got the fuel pump going etc. This time I jumpered the 87 and 30 pins and no noise at the fuel pump and still a no start. I figure the fuel pump is dead so I order a new one. At that point I remove the old one and filter etc. slight pain but all done and before I install the new one I decide to power up the old pump with a battery and leads and sure enough it comes to life and squirts out gas. I stop it quickly so as not to run it dry. So back to the no start. I test with a voltmeter the positive and negative hookups at the fuel pump and I am getting no power. That is when I jumpered the relay and still nothiung. I looked at the fuse and it looked OK to me. I did not replace the fuse, so maybe I need to. Sorry to be so long winded, but is there another connection maybe under the hood I should look at? Thanks Mark

yes replace the fuse.
also did you use the ground at the pump to see if you had 12v in the power wire?
try using another ground connection with the FP relay jumpered,
you might have a bad ground at the hatch grounding point

I did use the fuel pump ground wires when I tested the connections. Funky fuses but stupid of me to mot try that 1st. Visually it looks ok. I can see the wire does not appear to be melted. Thanks Mark

So.........I went out and took a glass Buss Fuse (new Fuse) and it was a lower amp fuse 5 amp, as it was as close as I could find a equal or lower and it started ran rough at first then blew the fuse. I took the original old fuse and cleaned up both ends with sand paper................put it back in and it fired right up and continued to work. I think I need to replace these old crusty fuses with new ones. What an irrateing ordeal!!!! Irrateting to me I didnt do it sooner. I guess after 37 years corrosion is an enemy!!!! Thanks for ther help, now on to the Cam / Valve cover leak????.......and the faulty alternator.......and the recent oil pressure switch that is bad..........
Is it possible to replace cam cover gaskets with engine in..........I have a pretty good oil leak that is of course leaking on the manifold and smoking alot????
Thanks Mark

I thought it was a pretty big job. The leak is bad enough it really doesnt give me a choice it needs to be fixed in order to drive the car. I have a 4 post lift in a house that I recently moved in to, but I dont have the garage doors fixed, so that they are a high lift set up. I have 2 other cars in my garage and the wife has a 3rd car in the garage which.........well lets say she ain't giving up her space. I would love to have the car on my lift while I start the project as I would love to get it straightened out. Need to get the garage doors done no matter what.
How many hours is the fix with a timing belt done at the same time?
8-10 hours????
Thanks Mark

Are you sure the oil leak is on the cam carrier gasket? Mine had an oil leak down the back of the heads, and it was the 3 bolt caps there - new cork gaskets , all clean again. From what I have read the cam carrier gaskets are a tricky job.

Quite frankly, I do not know where the leak is coming from. I had it on my lift before and it seemed to be from the front or close to the front of the passenger side cam cover. Can't really see anything from the top and when I look from the bottom I can see the leak on the front portion of the manifold. I just wish I could see where it is coming from without tearing everything apart. I really like the car and want to get it fixed....prefereably by me. Thanks Mark

Welcome!
Any car that has sat that long will likely have gunk in the fuel system, and the internal fuel filter/sleeve in the tank is highly suspect. I had an 84 that slept for 17 years and it ultimately what is that crap in the tank which drove me crazy. Don’t go diving in the multiple things at the same time, but just stick that in the back of your head.

Cover the dizzy in a plastic bag, spray the front, rear and outsides (fender side) of the cam covers and heads with gegreaser, rinse off with water, dry the clean parts as best you can, and run the engine, then look for leaks, so you can isolate the source. Hoist will be useful if the leak is on the outer side of the head. A camshaft seal is a possibility.

Need my alternator back before the weekend so I can do it!!!!!! Might as well replace the oil pressure switch. I had replaced a bad switch with a cheap URO switch thinking it would work.......and it did not work..........pressure was pegged.............RockAuto sent me a new one and will change it out and send back the POS bad one. You do sometimes get what you pay for.....maybe with some luck the new one will work??????? Beautiful day here this morning in Maryland......would love to drive to work.......Oh well hopefully we will have another beautiful day once I am done!!! Thanks Mark
