This is just getting worse. Got a used starter, bench tests ok, and install. Same thing, just clicks, but no crank. I'm getting some 12V to the start pick solenoid but it won't throw the darn thing and crank. Argh, I'm done messing with it today. Now I'm considering my ground cable, and ground to engine cables. I also made sure the engine is free to turn and not locked up(I was sure anyway). I think I'll get my wife out here on Sat to help me turn the key and I can take some voltage measurements.

I had a similar issue in my 81 when it got hot.
There was a voltage drop across the yellow wire caused by some bad wiring done during a alarm system removal at the connection to the CE panel. Plus there was also corrosion on the engine wiring loom.
I got rid of the corrosion by running a new wire parallel to the original harness down to the solenoid and reusing the original pin inside of the 14 pin harness.
I would check to see if any wiring has been bodged as well.
