12 Way Seat Will Not Recline
I bought a set of used front seats for my ’84. The driver’s seat is a 12 way memory seat.
To test the seat, I applied power to the red and brown wires, did nothing with the rest of the wires. The raise/lower, forward/backward, and lumbar all work. The seat back will not recline, the pivot shaft will rotate a few degrees in each direction, and the black relay box under the right front corner of the seat chatters when it stops.
The rear switch up/down does nothing, not sure what it is supposed to do.
I am looking for suggestions to troubleshoot and repair. The seat back is all the way forward now.

On my last 928 I thought that the recline didn't work but then I realized that if I slipped a screwdriver in behind the switch and levered it a little the switch made the necessary contacts and the seat moved as it should. It would never move by just pressing the button by hand though. I should've taken the switch apart but I was the only person who ever drove the car and I never really had to move the seat, so I quickly stopped caring.

I believe the switch is working, the relay chatters when the the back stops in both directions.
It is acting like it is mechanically bound.
How do I get to the motor, so I can bypass the switch and memory controls?

I did not. I bought them from 928 intl during their sale. The weather is finally nice enough here in PA to start the leather reconditioning.
It seems they lowered the seats all the way down, and tiped the seat back forward for shipping.
My next thought is intercept the wires to the seat back and try sendin the poer directgly to the motor.

The recline motor wires are the ones that disappear up into the seat back.
At least they are with the 8 way seats. Not sure about the 12s.
The rear up/down switch controls the back of the seat. Front switch raises & lowers the front of the seat, back does the back (again, 8 way).

I don't think so.
I believe that the motor turns a gear set that reclines the seat. AFAIK, there is no way, short of cutting into the seat back, to access the motor or drive gears.
However, I could be wrong on this.

1 - unclip electrical wires to seat back.
2 - unbolt seat back at pivot on both sides.
3 - remove seat back from car
4 - Unclip cover from base of seat back
5 - slide seat cover up & off seat back
