Possible Engine Failure - '89 S4: need input
Dave,
You couldn't be more correct regards confirming the future of the block: Rebuildable after a spun bearing or whatever... or a fancy boat anchor after TBF!??
Even at $6K for a rebuild, I'd be pedalling my way to Anaheim to further inquire about a prior polite intro to a $2K long block: If that couldn't be shipped and installed for <$6K total, would be a bit surprised..... and if the existing block is toast???
There's been a small chorus of support agreeing that it would be prudent, and likely wise, to do the TBF evaluation.

Big Dave ..... the intitial estimates are "talking" numbers prior to exploratory surgury . Once the engine is out and parts are scattered all over two work benches then the REAL numbers get added up . Just removing and replacing the engine is about $1,500 labor . Gasket set about $500 , bearings $300 , timing belt and parts $300 , new pistons are about $300 each (2,400 ) , motor mounts knock sensors heater hoses power steering hoses ......................... Then as you mention is the block usable or crankshaft O K ???? He needs to get a very detailed estimate of what EXACTLY he can expect in the initial "talking estimate" and how much for the "what ifs" ....pistons , rings , valve grind , boring block for new pistons , crankshaft etc .... It is helpful to ask to see the bill from the last 928 engine they " rebuilt " for several reasons .........
