if it was hydrolocked, I hope no rods have been damaged, when the porsche tech was hanging on the wrench

We did have one 928 where the front pump of the auto broke apart., this is connected to the outer shell of the torque converter, which is connected to the torque tube , etc. Anyway, when the pump broke it locked up and the engine could not be turned due to the direct mechanical connection.

Just a couple more thoughts to add ---
a) if there was enough gas in the sump to dilute the oil sufficiently to cause the crank to seize (decreasing viscosity/loss of fluid film/wiping bearing inserts), you'd think the dipstick level would be 1-2+ liters high. Was the level abnormal?
b) If checking for metallic bits, a magnet may not be of much help. The 'sacrifical' bits are nonmagnetic until the crank kisses the insert shells. A visual on the drained oil, or cutting the 'can' away from the removed oil filter (and spreading the folds of the element) may tell more.
c) pulling plugs & verifying 'fluid lock' is the more likely scenario at this point, as everyone has mentioned.
d) If there is any remaining concern re.TBF, now is the time to release the TT (front) pinch bolt - and measure crank end play... if the crank will budge.
Sad story, good luck with the analysis!!

Make sure he gets a detailed written quote for the work from the dealership. If the problem was not what they said, I'd bet your state has a division dedicated to dishonest mechanics.

Well if worse comes to worse...
and I'm not sure of the Model/year -rob's car- but there is a guy selling a 82 S for $650. on the SoCal site with alledgedly a bad clutch and what sounds like a shifter/ball/cup problem.
If the engine is compatable with Rob's sHARk assuming his engine is toast -you never know- could be the best investment he'll make this year.
Supposedly the tags just ran out on the 82.

Pull the oil filter off and with a cold chisel and a hammer, cut it open to see what didn't get circulate through the system.

If he needs a set of pistons when the overhaul is due I have a set of oversize pistons for $2000 USD.

As soon as he gets it flatbedded back to his place, I'll let you know what we find.

Thanks everyone!

Lizard,
My Bad,
I have two teeny-boppers and associated friends -unsure of exact numbers but have a series of shortcut paths worn into my front and side yards down to bare earth.
I thought installing a wireless router to LAN the two overworked PC's in my house would allow more flexible use -my turn!- .
Now I have two computers crammed with my daughters' AOL -they should burn in Hell- crap and my son is using one computer as a server for gaming around the world.
My real excuse is I can't find my reading glasses. ...
Which could explain my not reading/seeing the smaller case, '89 S4 input'. Point of fact when it was first posted I wondered why there wasn't a MY reference. Possible that it was edited in later. Either way thanks for the correction/clarification.

Greg,
As to piston replacement, nice offer but if was spun -mains-or perhaps a little machine work on the main cradle/journals from a pushed crank he'll need more than that.
Wrecking a 85? What'cha got left?
I guess we are all going to have to wish the best for the wounded sHARk and it's owner until he does a bit of investigating.

I'm definitely not an expert in diagnosis, but (as a few have suggested) the symptoms sounds just like what happened when my thrust bearing went. Although the fuel in the oil is different.

Good luck...

I'm told (by his wife) that he was at the dealership a little while ago getting the car brought home. Haven't had a chance to look at it yet, though.

Hi John hope you are well, I have seen a couple of 928 motors that suffered the 2/6 bearing failure that have also scored the bore at the same time. Maybe it's due to the metal from the bearing being thrown up on the bore. The dealer still has the block, (with the score marks) I was interested in buying it putting my pistons in it.

So he has a block but can't get the pistons (NLA) I have the pistons and can't get a block. Actually I don't care, but just want to move the pistons.

All the best for the New year!
