Default Official Slow Traffic Move Right Restoration Thread

Well I took the plunge and bought Mark Silver's "Slow Traffic Move Right" 85 Euro. I previously met Mark at a couple of SITM events back in the early 2000s so I had the seen car in it's prime. I went down to visit him and lovely wife Jane in Pensacola Florida. I ended up turning the whole trip into a very spontaneous spring break trip with the family and hit the beach for a few days. It was lot of fun. All in all, I think I spent over 30 hours driving. Ouch! Well here is a pic of the famous banner (before & now)

This thread is to document bringing her back to a strong runner and very respectable looking. After a first pass at cleaning here are some pics:

Here's my first pass on items to do:
  • Done - Verified engine turns by hand
  • Done - Removed 2lbs of nests, leaves and debris in engine bay
  • Done - Replace front hood shocks
  • Drain all Fluids and Gasoline
  • Put a vacuum on all lines and check for leakage
  • Replace obvious cracked hoses
  • Replace rear hood shocks
  • Replace Air Filter
  • Replace CPS Sensor (It's a goner)
  • Replace Battery
  • Replace Spark Plugs / Wires/ Caps & Rotor
  • Replace Twin Dizzy Belt
  • Replace Rear U Fuel Lines
  • Replace Hot Water Valve Vacuum
  • Replace all Door Seals
  • Replace Fuel Filter
  • Replace tranny gasket
  • Replace sound dampening in the rear
  • Replace trunk seal
  • Replace oil sensor boot on top of oil pan
  • Replace Seat Buttons
  • Replace Speaker **** by Driver Switch
  • Replace Windshield Rear View Mirror
  • New Paint Job!!

Things that it will need:
  • Possible new air box top
  • Replace airbox straps
  • New Electric Switches

I will be evaluating TB/WP as I go along and I'm sure there will be much more as I dig into it...

If anyone has anything on the needs/replace list - please PM me! THANKS!!!

More to come!

Well I started down the top end refresh - Plenty of hardened rubber bits. It's interesting how some rubber bits are completely fine while others in the same area are toast.
One the bright side - all of the spark plugs looked great!

One questions, is what is the best way to remount the feet that hold lower throttle body? Or do you have to buy new ones?

Those feet are bonded rubber and need to be replaced when they separate. Easiest way to remove them is to cut a slot in them with a dremel and unscrew them with a screwdriver.

^^ Mud daubers are chill, unlike their hornet and wasp cousins. Those can burn.

WOW! What a blast from the past. I remember him towing that up the last year he came with his them brand new Nissan Titan (that shows how long its been since that car has made a public appearance).

Will be good to see it back on the road again. If you talk to Mark, send him my best.

Well the CPS sensor seems to have welded itself to the hole. I've read some other posts about 'dremling' all around it remove the plastic. That's all been done. Plus, I've done PB blaster and the Acetone/ATFIII 50/50 mix for a week now. I'm considering taking drift and trying to knock it down flywheel/bell housing. What should I expect? Good or bad idea?

Hi Brad,

A for sure blast from the past! I hope Marc is doing well.

Wow, that thing has gone down hill for sure since the last time I drove it. Can't recall the year, believe it was the last year Marc drove it up.

Good to see it is in your capable hands and I look forward to the resurrection and seeing and driving it at a future SITM again!

Cheers,

Dave
