Default Front bumper hit, now won't start.

Last night someone backed into the front of the '85 Euro S (while it was sitting in front of my home) breaking the driver's side fog light lens (which curiously has another lens behind it - anyone know why?). Anyhow the battery sounds like it has been drained and subsequently does not have enough power to start the car. Nothing was left on, etc. Interestingly, the structure on which the driving/fog/signal housing for both sides has been moved back as both light housings on either side are now recessed about 3-4".

Any ideas or a point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

I'm going to charge the battery but don't want it dying on me at an inconvenient time in the future.

Since there was damage to the front lights, I'd start there by checking all the related wires and connectors, and anything that lights may have been pushed against.

Parking hit-and-runs are frustrating. Someone got the front bumper of my '82 the other day, leaving a large gash in the paint and no note.

Good luck

Sounds like you got hit good and the bumper shocks blew. Unlike what yoiu might expect, there's no spring in there. It's an oil-filled piston that bursts out the back to absorb the impact.

Replacing the shocks is gonna be expensive. The front fascia has to come off. I don't know the book hours, but from my experience I'd guess 15 hours at a minimum.

Check fan and it's wiring as well. Try turning things on -if a fuse blows you can at least eliminate the obvious. A note of caution if things have moved back that far check the headlight linkages and the 'C'clip that connects the motor/drivers side headlamp drive linkage to the actuatorarm for the long tube pass.side headlamp. If the clip pops off the linkage arm CAN 'hole' the radiator.
Jessa,
Say it ain't so!!!
Not the Weissach?
How bad?

Thank you all for the replies. I charged the battery and then left it in the car for the last two days and it's back in action, mystery? Nothing in the front area of engine bay looks "touched" by the incident.

I'm still curious why there are two lenses over the front fog light - should I have the lens replaced? It was a Bosch lens.

Thanks again!

I noticed that too and I'll venture a guess:

The fog light gets pretty hot and the double-lens arracngement keeps the outer cover cool. This prevents dirty water from drying on the glass.

I would replace it for cosemetic purposes. (BTDT)

Its surface damage only, John. This bumper cover had been painted by the PO on the Trained Monkey Special . I think someone backed in far enough to just deform the cover and not enough hit the real bumper, providing that flimy paint's final straw. The cover panel itself is fine, but its got a 7x1 inch patch of rubbed off paint on the tip of the nose.

Sad, sad sight, not sure what I'm going to do about it, since the whole thing needed paint work already and I'm not just ready to shell out for it now.
