Default Radio & Amp Wiring 1989

Does the power from the CE panel go to the Amp, before it goes to the radio, or not? BTW, my car has an after mkt Pioneer radio. I have no power at the fuse for the amp, in my 89. Considering the fuse #22, is mounted under the copper strip in the center of the panel with a tab, it seems weird that it doesn't have any power.

Thanks

With stock wiring: yes.
With an after-market amp: who knows. I’ve seen so many weird ways I’d hesitate to guess how yours is wired.

Actually that’s not entirely true...

The head unit has two power feeds. One is constant 12v. The other is switched/ignition-on 12v. Only one of those runs through the stock amp and, if I recall correctly, it’s the switched power.

PO had an aftermarket installed in my 928, the AMp was completely removed and only the radio remained. Have you checked if the AMp is installed, I assume you have being you said you have no power at it. A lot of newer steroids have a wire from the back of the radio supplying power to the amp, color will very. See if you have labels on the wires at the rear of the radio.

If P. Con is listed, that is Power Control to the AMP. I attached my wiring as an example

What year?
on an 85, 86 and S4 there are two separate feeds for power, one for amp via choke in side compartment and one for radio via choke behind the radio in console.
Edit and a constant 12v low amp feed to keep settings 😊

for the amp to turn on there is a 12v feed wire from the radio, I think its the same lead for antenna amp.

if u look at the right side of the CE, there is what looks like an inline fuse twist connector, it is the amp main power feed and runs directly to the side compartment.

Joe--

I'm pretty good with most wiring diagrams, and I struggled to try and match what's in the car to what the diagrams show. Power in my similar '89 car runs to the amp location, and on to the head unit as always-on power. Two red leads into a single Molex, one power and one to the head unit. There's switched power at the head unit, and the DIN connector and harness from the head unit to the amp include the "turn on" wire to the amp. The power antenna connection from the head unit appropriately supplies the antenna power amp for the stinger roof antenna.

Someplace I made (and shared at the time...) a diagram of what I found, with comments about the connections. I left the original Reno and amp wiring and connectors completely intact, and added a radio-side connector (SW Stereo) to adapt to the wiring on the replacement head unit. New power feed from the amp area to the head unit, and a new trigger lead to the amp location next to the seat. I ran new speaker wiring from the new head unit down to the old amp location, and plugged into the existing wiring there. Connectors came from Crutchfield, female sides of the little T-blade pattern connectors for the speaker feeds from the amp. Also from the head unit there are 5 low-level RCA and coax audio cables to feed an amp. They are currently coiled and stowed under the amp cover, and are long enough to reach the spare wheel well without splicing or stretching if need be at some future time. The wiring for a CD changer runs with all that too, and on to where the factory changer lived on the right side of the boot behind the rear right seat.

Thanks Bob!! I figured out the radio & amp. Now it won't start. It tries, and dies! All the nuts and bolts stuff, I can handle. Electrical is not my forte. If it wasn't sitting next to the Aero Coupe, and behind the Polecat, I'd let it burn!.............. Not really, but there are times that try my patience. I walked away, and will hit it tomorrow. I've got the drawings on a disk, I'm OK with air or hydraulics, mechanical engineer by profession. I just never learned electrical. When ya look at the CE Panel, all those wires are mind boggling.
