Default Replacement engine WYIT ? 87 S4 Auto

Just got my replacement engine from 928 INT.
Current motor has an impending failure from thrust bearing.
New motor will have heads pulled and redone. along with the usual things for intake.

Question.
Before I start tearing this thing down, what testing should I do as baselines?

Compression
Crank travel
?
?
?

Also will start another thread to look for best ways to flush the oil system of metal particulate prior to pulling the current motor. Current motor runs well, but does have a noticeable decrease in power, along with metal to metal sound on start up after sitting for extended periods of time.

Thanks

If you do not know the provenance of your new motor then for sure pulling the heads, sump and resealing the motor would be a good starting point.

Hopefully you will have some mitigations against TBF!

Yup,
I couldn't find any information from searching the VIN on here for knowledge of prior owners.
Will reseal, and (probably) have the heads sent out. I could just do the head gaskets and not concern myself with the valves and seals.
Will cross that bridge after I pull the heads and look at the cylinders.
$$ is always a concern.

When I took the previous engine out for all of the WYIT items, I was budget conscious and it worked out pretty well.
Really would like to send the heads out, but don't know that 4K is in the budget for it.

Was wondering if there are vacuum tests that I should do.
I think Wayne's intake procedure lists it.
Must start the reading process again.

I would definitely do the valve seals. A leakdown test is a good approach but unless the motor is warm I am not sure it has much meaning. When we put my late S4 motor into the GTS we lapped the valves albeit they did not need much if anything.

Regarding your old motor there is not much of any meaning that you can do to flush it. The heads may be recoverable but even then the followers are likely toast. The rods may be recoverable but your crank is almost certainly history. Even the piston coating is likely trashed so probably not an awful lot to recover other than cam/oil pump/crank sprockets?

Since you bought it from 928 Int, I'm pretty sure they do a compression test on their engines prior to selling.

I would definitely get the heads rebuilt as the exhaust valve guides more than likely will be worn. Now is the time to do such work, not later after the fact.

Since you have metal in the oil, you have metal in your oil cooler, therefore, you must replace the radiator. It is the only way to ensure there is no left-over debris to foul the new engine. Cleaning the existing one is iffy at best and not recommended.

I speak from hard-earned experience...

Roger or 928 Int. has brand new replacement radiators with both coolers for an excellent price.

Just do it.

There are places that can flush out oil coolers that have been filled with metal shavings, though they're typically done by ultrasonic cleaning. Might be worth finding the local radiator shop and asking them what they can do.
