Default Hot Mess with Drivers Side Lock

I had to put the wrench down and walk away, before I break something.
I need somebody to point me in a different direction please:
So I replaced drivers side handle, and on re-assembly I've got issues.
Essentially, everything works except one thing:

The action for the interior rotary **** is getting hung up on something. If that makes sense.
If I take off, or loosen, the two hex bolts for latch catch on the outside -- then it will turn normally. If they are tight, then you cannot rotate the interior ****!?
The arm/rod running from the linkage clip to the rotary **** slot and out the top for the push button seem to be positioned fine.

Initially, I thought it was the tension band from the handle to the mechanism too close to the internal latch components, but detaching made no difference.
I've moved the carrier arm, with the winder motor around in different placements but no joy there either.
I have some pics below. Security plate removed ( that should not make a difference right?). And tension band to handle still off, and arm to rotary removed to show the Gordian knot of internal latch components.

Just to be clear, you are trying the rotary **** with the door closed/latched or with the latch mechanism on the door jamb in the latched position?

when issues occur with the lock its usually from over tightening the lock surround and or over tightening the rotary lock **** screw.

SO loosen the **** screw a few turns pull the **** out till it hit the screw, you will notice that screw has loctite on it .

loosen the lock surround,
With the palm of your hand , snug the lock surround, thats all it needs.
if you use any tools for this then the chances are high you will break the **** surround support,
or cause the lock **** to bind

Sorry for delay, I had some long days at work.
I was doing most of the fiddling with door open and not closed and not caught on the latch.
After I saw this, I went out and looked at the “good”, passenger side lock. The **** turns freely To lock position whether door is open or closed and latched.

Thanks Stan, I will give it another go.

If you have one, try another latch. They wear in ways you just can’t see..they look fine then act weird under various circumstances. Driver latches wear out first of course. A slight bend in the latch could do it as well...The tightening of the latch bolts could be changing an angle just enough to bind it.

IIRC, the ***** will not function unless the latch is in the closed position. The owners manual for my 1990 calls out specifically that the passenger side locking **** is only operational with the door fully latched. On my car at least, neither the driver side or passenger **** is operational unless the door is latched.

That is a great idea, I will order one.

Also a great idea, thanks you guys.
I would love for it to be something like this, where I was just doing it in the wrong order and positon.
The weather is improving and my eye is starting to twitch , that this fiddly little thing is keeping me off the road!

Ok you guys, somebody help me with this:

I went back in, pulled everything.
Cleaned and oiled mechanics.
Put back together.
Both interior and exterior handles work properly, except I cannot push down button or turn interior **** into lock position. Either when door open or closed.

Until I disconnected the tensioner arm at the winder........
With that disconnection, **** and button work fine. I can lock/unlock door with **** and button.

Is this what a winder motor failure would look like?
With car running, I can hit central lock button and hear the drivers side winder activate but not turn ****.
With tensioner arm off of motor, I can easily turn the actuator pin on top back and forth with no resistance. Is that normal?
