Unhappy Hood Shocks Do Not Hold Up Hood

I have new hood shocks on my 1985.5 / 944 and they will not hold the hood up. Is this a common problem and is there a fix short of getting new ones? Are heavy duty ones available? Are VW or Audi hood shocks more reliable?

Buy new ones - they are relatively inexpensive.

I see you are located in the West Indies - you can order from any of the 'Big 3' 928 suppliers located in USA, or from your local parts purveyor.

Are you sure they're the right shocks? Got mine from 928 Int and they work great two years later even when it's very cold.

There are also horror stories of people bending the hood because of "heavy duty" units.

What ever you do - Don't clean the rods w/a petroleum based cleaner or such. It will kill your hood shocks in seconds flat -

Ask me how I know.

I've heard of people installing them the wrong way, upsides down. And they won't hold the hood up that way.

I think they will hold the hood up either way. The correct way is with the big end at the top so grit doesn't settle around the seal. Alhough they are the same length, the hatch shocks are stiffer than the hood shocks.
