Default Replace gear's engagement/dog ring

The engagement ring (or whatever it's called) split on my manual transmission's 4th gear. That made it easy to get the old one off the gear at least. I got a new ring, but I'm having trouble getting it on. I assume I need to press it onto the gear, but it doesn't feel like it wants to go on. Since my old one cracked and it isn't the biggest hunk of metal I'm scared to force it. It isn't the cheapest piece of steel and I don't want to have to buy another one. Has anyone done this? Is there any trick, or is it simple brute force?

Thanks

Call Greg Brown at Precision Motorwerks in Anaheim CA.,

Which part number are you asking about?

The Porsche diagrams don't break it out separately. It's shown as part of the gear, but the gear and the engagement ring are actually separate pieces.

Ah, that makes sense Mark. I'm always nervous when freezing stuff as it seems to get condensation on it and I'm paranoid of rust or water getting trapped between the press fit. Am I just being foolish, or should I do anything to avoid that issue? Or just spray it with WD40 or immerse it in oil when I take it out of the freezer before pressing it.

Thanks

When the gear/engagement ring was originally assembled, the engagement ring is pressed onto the gear and then the teeth on the gear were spread to retain the ring.

When an old engagement ring is removed, these teeth on the gear will still be spread at the very tips, making installation of a new ring impossible.

Close inspection of the teeth on the gear makes this problem obvious.

The only way to accomplish this task is to file the raised ridge off of every tooth. The new engagement teeth can then be installed by pressing or with a lead filled plastic hammer.

.......The tough part is figuring out how to retain the new engagement teeth on the old gear, so that it will not move away from the gear, with use. (This always occurs, if the teeth are installed without some sort of active retension.)
