928 racing
Thought crossed my mind today. There was talk awhile back about a race class the 928 could not run in anymore do to the fact it was out of production. My question would be, if Porsche makes a car and slaps the name 928 on it no matter how different it looks from are cars, Would not the 928 then be able to enter that class again??

The question would be, could an original 928 race in a Porsche-homologated new-928 class? I think what you're thinking of, are mods and max sizes. Since the 928 was never homologated with wide fenders and super-wide rear tyres, no turbo, etc ... that would be the max that would be considered "stock" whereas the 911 was sold in even 935 and GT1 form, stock ... which allowed those forms of the car to be raced as stock. I think (correct me if I'm mistaken) the 928 can hop into a stock race any day ... but its stock configuration could never keep up with the Porsche competition on-track ... though I've seen Kim Crumb kinda kill that principle in Tom's stock S4 auto (may she rest in peace)..

Gold , that is the Speed GT world challenge ( made for T V series )which wants only new to five year old models running BUT BIG BUT they have allowed older models to "race" a partial season . As long as the older model is not going to be in contention for the championship , embarass too many new model cars they need cars to fill the field and keep it interesting . Mark Anderson and Mark Kibort both have been running in that highly competitive professional racing series . The head of Porsche Motorsports was asked if it was O K to let the 928 still run ....he said fine . The importance of the advertising dolllars (commercials, sponsor ship ) means they want to showcase the new cars even if that means allowing cars which were not available to the public exept in appearance compete . So superchargers were allowed some models , V-8 engines in 6 cylinder chassis etc........ The overall objective is to have "equal" performance In fact if you win a race as I recall , you get to carry 50 lbs more weight for the next race . Keep winning and it gets more weight . The discussion of what class for PCA /POC club D E / racing hinges upon the fact that both clubs when trying to equalize various models of Porsche car relies heavily on two items . The first is lbs per HP which might be reasonable for DRAG RACING but is extremely biased if you must also brake and turn ! . The second is rim width where the 911 due to all the variations of "stock" is usually allowed wider rims than the 928 . Combine the two and it is difficult for a 3,300 lb 928 to be competitive . Remove weight and you quickly jump up to higher and higher classes with more power , less weight , wider rims But the 928 really never catches up until you hit the unlimited normally aspirated HIGHEST modified class . There it must be 2,600 lbs , 500 hp 6.5 liter , big slicks .......... It races against $150,000 factory 911 race cars
also, the name of the car doesnt really matter, as the 911 is in the same boat when he is entered as a 993 (97 and older). mustangs in the same boat too, even though there is a new mustang out, old body styles get half a season max, if at all.
we (928s)are very lucky that we are still allowed to run half the season. Im planning on doing half the season right now, unless sponsorship and personal funds dry up even further!! (and the acusump-less engine keeps on running!)
