California Smog Inspection - '82 Euro
Here we go. I bought the 1982 Euro last year that had a smog test done and a California vin plate installed on the car. Well I have a smog test due in March and I went to do a pre test yesterday and my guy said he will not do a test because I have no evap system in the car. He showed me in the book what is required and its not much, but evap is required. He said it does not even need a smog pump by what the book shows. I have a 1982 US spec parts car that I can get the evap system from.I was at the German car specialist before I went to smog and he said I had an oxygen sensor controlled fuel metering solenoid installed as well. I'm wondering how this was handled all these years any ideas on how I can transfer the system from the parts car? I'm not to thrilled right now.

Here's the emissions sticker for an '82 California market car- adding the carbon canister isn't all that big a deal but it'll be painful if you have to add the evaporative hardlines that run under the car if they're not there.

Thanks for that. I have started removing the parts from the parts car and it has everything however it is an l jet car and the euro is k jet.I think it can be switched over but there is not a third hardline going to the tank. I might have to switch tanks to make it work, any thoughts?

Did the inspector actually look to see if the carbon canister is in the RF wheelhouse? The only way to see it there is with the main section of the liner removed. The canister vents to the intake via a fabric-covered hose that passes through the fenderwall forward of the windshield-washer tank filler neck, and proceeds toward the engine intake. The canister is shown on Rob's hood sticker on the right side. I'm not aware of any market that didn't receive this system from the factory.

Is there a fuel expansion tank high up in the right rear wheelwell? The European versions of PET are a little confusing, for 78-82 they list the carbon canister as only being for US/Canada/Australia/Japan markets, but the fuel expansion tank and hose back to the filler neck appears to be standard for all markets. It' be helpful to know exactly what is and isn't there on your Euro. (And how it got registered in CA without the evaporative stuff in place. And how he's going to know whether there's a carbon canister present in the fenderwell actually connected to all the vapor hoses you're going to add underhood)

He went looking for it and didn't find it. I could install the one from the donor car I see where the hoses pass through the fender holes and they are empty. We only did a pre test. I have until the middle of March to handle this maybe go to another shop or install I don't Know.

Hi Rob I will go and look under the Euro to see if there is something there. The plumbing is defiantly different between the two cars for one thing the Euro only has two hardlines going back and the California one has three.

Hey Rob I looked in the fender well of the Euro and now I see three lines going forward, do I have to remove the liner to see the tank you were talking about?

Here is where they stuck one in an 82 Euro I currently have here.
Nevermind. Freaking IB can't get anything to work..... Give me a few and i'll upload it someplace and then copy it here.

You don't have to remove the liner in the back of the right front wheelwell to see whether the carbon canister is there or not, here's a pic of that area showing all the grommeted holes that the vapor hoses pass through. This pic is from a 1979 US model, should be identical to what's supposed to be present in '82:
In the right rear wheelwell, you're looking for the black plastic expansion tank high up in the top of the recess:

Here is an old thread regarding this on my 84 Euro. I ended up removing all of the federalized add on stuff and returned it to factory Euro spec, with no charcoal canister and plumbing. It now vents to the atmosphere behind rear bumper, as from the factory. Probably not an option for you in CA, but my car is smog exempt in MA.

FYI the tech is required by CA law to put N/A for the evap portion of the test if he can't clamp the vent line on the charcoal canister without "partially disassembling the vehicle" which includes plastic fender liners.
A bit of a hike for you but try the smog station at Cruiser's Carwash in Northridge, friendly guy runs the place and did my 944 twice for re-registrations. And I've got a "fender liner evap system" too.
One time I pulled up for a test and had to wait behind a yellow MP4-12C getting smogged...why it was there (so new) I don't know but the guy didn't blink.

Thanks for all of the input everyone I have removed the canister from the California car and I need to look closer at the Euro for an expansion tank.Rob that picure of the canister is there any chance you could show where the two hoses are plumbed into.
