Well, the 86.5 was a US only thing. Or actually, the "86" was.

All MY86 ROW cars got the S4 bits. Only the US saw MY86 cars that were identical to the 85s (for the first part of the production run). The "early 86" US cars don't have the S4 stuff. Later ones do and are referred to as "86.5".

AFAIK (and the real experts will no doubt correct me ) the identifiers are:

Suspension
Brakes
Exhaust
Jack points.

The jack points are the easiest to see. Square ones at the back (just ahead of the rear wheel) that can be seen from the side.

Thanks Mrmerlin, my VIN ends0480 so that's a no to it being an "86.5"...

What's the entire VIN?

If it's "WP0ZZZ..." then it's a ROW car (commonly called a "Euro" here in the US).

All the ROW cars had the S4 bits in MY86.

The 86/86.5 differentiation is a US thing only.

Seeing your location is Edinburgh, I'm going to guess that it's not a US car.

Wow! That's in rough shape. Was your car driven year round rain or snow?

Its early in the 86 year, but its a RoW '86, so it has all the upgrades a USA model 86.5 has.

As Joe notes above - 86.5 is a North American market thing only.. the rest of the world got later style suspension, brakes, jack points, ABS sensors etc. for the whole 86 model year.

86.5 Euro will have the interior light delay relay, S4 type seats with tilt levers rather than buttons, other things I can't remember.... but can look up for you.

Thanks ReDesign - I see now, think I have found some later matching balljoints in the UK of the correct spec.

Thanks all. Just wrestling with a pile of refurbed/new parts for assembly. Will post pictures to prove it happened then onto engine resealing...
So that's 1 year 2 months since I bought the beast. Only another 3 years, 10 months before it's "finished" haha!

Nice set of shiny parts, nearly ready to go...

Just a few bolts to replace/get replated...
Plus swap on of the top arms, when I unwrapped them supplier had sent 2 left or 2 right, haven't worked out which yet....

Haha, ********* intact last time I looked. My beloved wife came pre trained by a serial classic car owning father bless him;
- 13 x Aston Martins inc 2 x internationals & 1 x DB4gt (see photo), N400, V8 Vantage, DB6,
- 968, 911 Carrera 4,
- Lotus Europa JPS,
- 3 x Austin Healey,
- Caterham 7,
- 2 x E type roadsters

He didn't have these at the same time, that would be greedy, but back in the day when such things were much more affordable (sigh). He died last year and I still miss chatting to him about his cars and exploits. He would have been the first person I would have told about the '89GT I bought last month and one of the few people to recognise it's significance.

Now that is a big plus! Having in-laws you can relate to is also priceless as I well understand- all the more painful when they depart this world sad to say.

As for the classic Astons- nothing more needs to be said. As a 12 year old on a bus to school in Bradford over 50 years ago we used to pass a DB5 parked in front of a big house in Batley every morning. The car was probably worth more than Batley put together! 280 BHP from 4 litres in 1963 and 315 [?] in Vantage form! I later wondered if the car might have been connected to the David Brown [DB] family given he hailed down the road from me in Huddersfield. The ironic thing about DB was that whilst the DB series were being built in Newport Pagnell he drove a Jaguar would you believe!

Rgds

So looks like it has taken me longer to try to put this lot together than I thought looking at my last post date....Managed to wrangle the crossmember and one side of the car back together but I have some niggling doubts/stupid questions I am hoping someone can help me with -

1) Are the lower suspension arms handed - WSM gives a single number (and qty 2 off) for my model year, but the arms I received from the supplier look as if there is a preset of the forward bush. I have the right hand side together (RH sitting in car rather than looking at it) this is a photo of the one I have left to fit to the LH side. Have I a) made a mistake int he assembly and fitted left to right side, or b) are the parts wrong, should I have a left and right.

To me this looks as if it goes on the RH, not the LH

2) Lower balljoints - again WSM appears to show single part number for model year and qty 2 off but on inspection of the part one of the slots has an offset counterbore for the outer eccentric (sorry haven't got a photo to upload yet) I don't understand how this can be, surely if the counterbore feature in the balljoint is offset, then there must be a LH/RH version of the part??

Happy weekend spannering everyone

David
