IIRC, this was mentioned in one of Greg Gray's recent threads as being different. I think 944 valves are farther apart which allows bigger valves in big bore engines.

S4+ head are little closer to 3L as cams fit directly but water channel difference shown in pictures remain in blocks.

I would like more info from Marc, I believe that there is a real problem running 944 heads on a 928, the reason is the valve spacing. If the valves are spaced differently you need a cam that has the same different spacing too. Well that is my opinion anyway. Maybe there is something I am missing? If Devek were running special cams that would explain it. Also I am using a 2.10" valve, how much bigger do you want to use?

According to this, a 928 S4 head (3L 32V) can fit a 2.5L block ! if only we open the water hole on the side of the head ?
