hey guys, i have posted this before and want to try again. i am looking for the following:
a very nice 928 with great paint/body and gaps. want a trouble free car. do not care about the year as long as it is a very nice car inside and out. do not care about miles as long as it has been maintained well. i do not want a headache, want something i can jump in and drive. prefer a manny but an auto is ok if it is set up properly. would prefer a nice car that is a nice candidate for a turbo or sc setup
i am not looking for a car that someone wants to sell and retire after the sell, meaning a $75k and up car, no offense to the 928 crowd but these cars are not worth that IMO.
thanks

I think I understand what you're looking for and what you're willing to pay but I'm not sure I would have worded it like that in the 928 forum.

Can I suggest that you prowl the "928's for Sale" thread sticky'd at the top? Watch the Bring-a-Trailer site, as that seems to attract some of the nicer cars than ebay. Also look at Michael Wilhoit's selection of outstanding examples.
Every once in a while there could to be that gorgeous low-miles perfectly-maintained needs-nothing drive-it-anywhere trouble-free no-worries-ever 928 sneaking into the market. They are rare and prized by many. One of those for much less than it sold for new? Even rarer, and becoming more so by the day. Keep an eye peeled, have cash and be ready to pounce.
OTOH, most cars in that rarified strata change hands privately. It's a good idea to remind folks that you are ready and willing to buy the right one when it shows up. Good luck with your search!

A car with great paint, nice interior and is mechanically sorted will run you a minimum of $15k-$20k in my opinion. Not sure if that's in your budget or not. Focus in on the 928S model. Relatively lots built and less mechanically complicated than the 32V cars. Look for an common color like black, red, silver or white. AT will save you a few grand all else being equal. If you want a car you can jump in and drive, you'll likely have more luck buying one from a RL or PCA memeber that loved the car.

OP, IM0, you will be improbably lucky if you find what you describe for less than $50k.

So, you want a very nice inside-and-out manual 928 that has been maintained (where that means 'restored') to the point where you can jump in and drive and its so-good that you can add forced induction without having to do further restoration.
$35k if you can find one where the owner doesn't know what they have and has forgotten about the $10k+ that's been spend in the last 5 to 10 years over-and-above scheduled maintenance.

Look at my signatures and let me know which ones you want and for what price. I’m consolidating to only a handful of 928.
the 21k mile ‘89 and 15k mile ‘85 should fit your bill.
The ‘79 petro also will but I don’t think you’d pay my asking for that.
good luck, hoi

- 35+ year old head gaskets are not something on which I would roll the forced-induction dice. Not to mention that all the rubber needs to go. All sensors and actuators need to be refreshed. So, motor needs to come out.
- pre-'85 gear box is, IMO, not the best candidate for FI. Clean-up OE box, put in bag on shelf. Buy Borg Warner-synchro'd box.
- 225s on all fours with floating caliper brakes. Too little rubber and brake for FI.
How much is a motor pull and refresh? Better gear box? Wider wheels and tires and brake upgrade? Add that to purchase price. Then add cost of supercharger and install.
My $0.0928.
'course I would want a reliable 928 that isn't trying to kill me that I can drive without fear of white (or other color smoke) coming out.
Sure you can buy any 928 and 'throw' FI on it. But, how much time and $ does it take to make it reliable and not stupidly unsafe?
Go have a short talk with Tim Murphy and ask him about post-purchase tech support. TL;DR: Very rarely a problem with his kit. Almost always a problem with something busted on the car.

Christian: With so few details re your requirements, I think you need to do more hands on research. Basically you've said you are looking for a turn-key car. By definition, they sell at a premium.
Get to a local GTG or consider travel to the larger events like Hershey. There will be unknown number FS there. as well as about 15 of us there. And we love to talk our cars. At least once it is worth the expense for what you will learn. You might try the 3rd Coast gathering. Each iteration of the 928 is feels and drives distinctly differently, but may not be apparent from looking at pics and someone else's description.
There is ebay, cars.com, autotrader, BAT. If you find something FS that is not on the FS thread, post it, but know that you are advertising it.

Given that you want to make it non-original, I'd suggest starting with something with a straight body that needs mechanical work and doing an LS + Corvette transaxle conversion. It'd probably need the interior doing too. You're going to lose a lot of money once you start messing with an original car, and have some very big bills if you blow an original engine or drivetrain.

That is the only 928 Specialists non-intercooled Twin-Screw car in existence.
IIRC, There is a thread ‘round here about ‘Kevin From Atlanta’ putting the replacement transaxle in it.
And it still has its factory 928 sport seats.
I wish I’d bought it when it was, a couple of years ago, offered at $20k with the numbers-matching transaxle.
