all valves require "condoms" otherise you destroy the seal.

Default Valve Seal Washers?

Thanks for all your help so far, I should have asked before, what are the larger washers for that came in my bag of valve seals? The eight smaller ones I presume are for the oil feed for the cam chains, but what are the twelve larger ones for?

Default All Done!

Thanks for all your help Randy, here's the Valve Seal Installation Tool my dad made for me from your diagram:

Finished the last one a few hours ago - Worked Perfectly! Now it goes to a friend of mine who is about to pull his 88 S4 SE engine and has been lending me tools from the start!

Can we expouse on this a bit? We are talking about putting a protective cover over the tip of the valves, while in the head, as we install the valve seals? And why are we not installing the seals without the valves in the head?

Confused a bit.

Thanks,

Brendan,
Because you'd still be pushing the valve through the seal and the seal will be destroyed by the keeper recesses in the valves as they pass through the seals. Plus if you put them in w/o the valves your screwed twice, because you can't put the "condom" on the valve and slide it through the guide. Now you've got to remove 16-32 seals and do it all over again the right way if the seals survive removal.

Paul/Paul's Dad,
Nice Job! Someday I'll make one for myself too. Glad its going well for you.
