Default Lowest miles 928 on the road ?

For my 100th post I would like to pose a question

What is the lowest miles 928 on the road (thats not including the very last 928 in Porsches museum)

To start it off we have a '87 S4 in the UK with only 5,000 miles on it & its put 1200 of those on in the last 3 months !

If there's a 17 year old with only 5000 miles on it how can you say that it's "on the road".. Can't imagine that it's being parked on the street..

Talking Low Mileage 928

On Monday a 944 owner friend of mine and I were cruising north of Atlanta and he commented on the spirited manner in which the 928 went from 80 to 100+mph. That led to the fantasy of finding a near new 928 sitting in a garage with all maint. done. Of course he and I both agree that it wouldn't stay low mileage for long.
They are much more fun to drive than to look at. IMHO

It was brought back in the summer with 3,800 miles on it, it obviously had not been used much in 16 years ! but now having done 1200 miles in the last few months it is most definitley on the road.

3,800 is possibly as close new as will be found, yes it had full maintainance records (only one elderly owner) & has had new TB etc. & yes it is now clocking up the miles even in the rain to go to the UK 5th anniversary meet 2 weeks ago

Martin,
Do you have a good picture of the Sport Classic IIs on your car. I plan on upgrading my wheels this winter, and those are high on my list of possibilities.

We have an '87 auto in Seattle with as i recall, 17k miles. This car is not driven, only pulled into and out of the garage regularly, and the owner has recently started driving it more at my insistence. Also had the original tbelt and wpump on till this year, again replaced at my insistence.

The interior and engine and exterior still smell new.

I recently saw an '87 with 4k genuine miles in Portland, which is used for engine development, and riding in it was like being in a brand new car.

That's a cool picture, but it doesn't help me much I'm going through the whole 17" vs. 18" decision process. If I go with the 18", I'm trying to decide between the SC IIs and the AT Rivas...

I still don't understand why people don't drive these things more. Mine's daily driver and I've logged nearly 35K miles since August 2001. Loved every mile!

Lowest one I know of was an all original 1978 with 14k miles on it when it was bought buy a guy named Ed in the DC area back in 02. He got it off Ebay. I saw it with my own eyes at the Hershey Swap in '02 before Ed bought it. Some of the other 928 guys here saw it too. I have no idea how many miles Ed has on it now.

Low milage just means low usage. Low usage means deterioration. If a car doesn't have a couple (5-6000) miles on it in a year, I'd wonder "why?"

Being on the road keeps them on the road. How else do you asess the condition and performance of it? My car had 140K on it after 20 yrs. and I've put 14K mi per year on it just in the summer. That's how I keep it running, but driving it. - Ruf

Hmmm. There may be a few exceptions to your rules. Low usage just means that deterioration is age related only. Drive a car during that same period and you get wear and tear as well as the age-related stuff. Taking the opposite tack, a car that taken out somewhat regulalrly is much more likely to have things maintained and even repaired on that somewhat regular basis. I guess that car I want to own has almost no miles on it when I get it, and the last few were spent taking care of all the age-related maintenance items that needed attention.


When my car landed on me six years ago, it had been an occasional weekend driver for the PO. He maintained it religiuosly according to all the dealer receipts, including oil changes every six months if the car had been driven at all. In that first eight years he maneged to roll up a whopping 22k on the meter. According to the two sets of tires he bought during that time, he had a hell of a good time during those miles. I figure he spent in excess of $8/mile just in depreciation, insurance, periodic maintenance.


So when it was picked up, I had the local-to-the-car dealer bring everything up to current on the scheduled maintenence. T-belt and pump, hoses, fluids, etc. Didn't need any repairs at all based on the PPI, they said. I do have to say the car has been darn close to perfect since then.


So how does dr bob drive the car? Since fall of '97, I've run the miles up to a whopping 62K. Trans has been serviced twice during my ownership, oil changed regularly, one battery, coolant swapped twice, brakes once. I changed off the lset of tires the PO supplied with the car at 57k because of age, not because they were worn out, so you get a clue about how gentle the right foot is.

So my car has seen both extremes of ownership-- first guy drove it like he stole it, but maintained it well. Second owner drives it when he has the chance, and maintains it well. There's another extreme, the PO from hell, who drives the car until it breaks and then gripes about it, or even sells it. Worse, he fixes the one thing that's really broken, and dumps the car on some unsuspecting newbie who spends half again on first-year ownership costs. This last extreme is why our cars sell for so little. It's also the reason I was able to justify the car I have. If I was dumping hi-mileage repair costs into my car, its spot would be occupied by a new MB or Audi sedan in a heartbeat. The 928 is a very fun car, but in the end it really is just a car. So far, repairing the age-related stuff both on me and on the car has been plenty. I'm trying to hold off the high-cost period on the car, and will replace it when it turns that corner. Wife will probably do the same with me...


Today, I'd buy a low-miles car long before a high-miles example. Stuff may be just as old, but it won't be as worn out.

My situation was more akin to Dr Bobs. In feb 01 when i bought the '79 it had 48k miles on it. My PO bought it 18 months prior from the original owner at 37k miles and sunk big dollars into it before he got a GTS. All the records that came with the car indicate that it was pampered and maintained, just not driven alot. It was a corporate owned vehical from new. Ive had it comming on 3 years and have brought the mileage upto 81K. And its not even a daily driver. I occasionally drive it to work, but mostly its the only car i drive on the weekends, so it sees alot a use on Saturday and Sunday. Plus its the only choice for long trips by car.
