Default Manual A/C - 1980

My 1980 US A/T is in the garage and I have started by winter projects. I have the pod and dash out, and I cannot make sense of the manual heater controls. Here is a little history. When I purchased the car, the heater controls crumbled. I purchased a manual unit from 928 International and installed it following WSM 87-2. All my pods function and each holds a vacuum, except for the center pod. The center pod had a slow leak. I have good vacuum from the engine. The A/C compressor is shot, and I have not tackled the A/C repairs yet. When I installed the unit, the vents did not operate as they should. Heat did work, but it only blew through the center vent. Also, the heater flap could not be fully opened, or at least the lever would not pull the full face distance of the controls. Now that I have the dash off, I am really confused. I removed the center pod to see why it was leaking and found it is attached to nothing inside the heater box. I have a single solenoid at the lower right corner of the heater box which is not shown on the diagram and was not connected (wire or vacuum). The center pod does not appear on the WSM diagram. The parts diagram shows 2 solenoids. I have been able to find information on vacuum line routing on '78-'79, and '83 on, but the early '80's seem to be a bit of an oddity. I assume the WSM diagram is the '78-'79 diagram.

Here are my questions:
1. Is this heater box for an automatic A/C?
2. Has the PO cut/removed the center flap inside the box?
3. Does the manual '80 controls use the Solenoid and center pod?
4. Can air be directed to the floor or defroster without the center flap?
5. Is the center vent manual operation the only way to force air to the defroster and foot well?

Any insight and direction proper control function, vacuum line routing, and control installation is appreciated. Thanks again in advance.
