Default 19" wheels

Hi,

So in the early 1980s Porsche Cup was using 19" BBS wheels on race cars , I know this as a Australian because those wheels were used on the Dick Johnson Greens Tuff XE Falcon at Bathurst..and the Tyres were made special for them as there wasn't anything that big at the time..

Clearly Porsche led the race with large wheels historically in the early 80s ...19" wheels.

Another aspect to the discussion is around weight of larger wheels.. Being larger diameter wheels are heavier than 16" wheels with tyres, I have seen this is also False Myth given similar design wheels..the 16" race wheels with tyres verse 19" race wheels , the Larger 19" is lighter! as the excess rubber in the 16" wheel makes it heavier. It doesn't make a car slower.

If 19" wheels were wrong for old cars.."there not designed for larger diameter 19" wheels!" ( this is the point put forth by champions of the old school 16" wheel) , Dick Johnson in his Falcon XE (Taxi/cop car) wouldn't have run the wheel combo in 1983 at Bathurst! https://youtu.be/WpNqdpVebMY

For those that don't know Bathurst is a public road race track in Australia..not a special prepared race smooth track..

IF only Porsche and Johnson got together back in the 80s in a V8 928..

19's may not be too big for the car from a performance standpoint but they are definitely too big from an aesthetic standpoint. IMO, of course.

Some 19" wheels can significantly increase unsprung weight. Be sure to keep an eye on him weights during your selection.

All the pro racing 911s that I've seen locally use 18" rims. Makes you think why they stopped at 18.

The examples shown don't further your case, they further mine. Again, just my opinion.
Carry on if it makes you happy!
For me, 18's will be the largest.

Correct, but the same can be said about any aftermarket wheel in all sizes (17,18, etc). A general rule of thumb is the cheaper they are the heavier they are.

No worries, I still have some 928 friends that think the 15s and 16s look the best and would never go to 17s or 18s.

But I agree 18s look great also...

Cheers, and Happy Holidays,

Dave

I've seen ultra light 19s with tyres...not talking rice bling wheels , Porsche was running 19s in the early 80s. Nobody went slower because of it.

Somebody said in another thread "Porsche followed the trends " no, Porsche set the trend, and not many 18s on there current top performance models I've noticed.

Yes very true and also the reason I have OE 986S IIs on my car. Very light wheel, maybe not hollow spoke light but for a 17" wheel they are lighter than Cup 1s or 2s. However I am stuck with a 245 or 255 rear tire. No biggy still.

I prefer bigger rims on 928's since they fill out the cavernous wheel wells and providing balance to the car. Those 16" rims look so tiny in there.

Those cars shown from DR look fantasic...

One thing I noticed is that an overall diameter of 25" in the front (wheel and tire) and 26" in the rear levels the look of the car instead of the 25" rear... Which I think makes the car look frumpy.
