Default steering shaft issue

the splined, threaded steering wheel shaft on my 928 will not allow me to install an aftermarket MOMO wheel and adapter I have. the splined portion of the shaft sits slightly recessed in the steering wheel column. If I put the nut on the end of the shaft and pull, I can get the splines to protrude further, but when I release the shaft, it returns to its original shorter state.

Can I adjust this end of the shaft, perhaps from the firewall to allow more of it to push through?

I'm having a hard time picturing what you're saying.

When I installed mine, I used this adapter and it worked perfectly (I just needed a new washer): http://www.ogracing.com/sparco-steer...-928-912s-911s

threads do not protrude far enough through the aftermarket hub for me to put a nut on it. The shaft splines are partially recessed in the steering column.

you need to get the correct 928 MOMO hub adapter .
the shaft is spring loaded and thus not adjustable,
messing with the shaft will usually result in damaging the upper bearing.

What model Momo adapter do you have? Just because it fits the splines doesn't mean it's the correct one.

please post a picture of the protruding splines without the hub adapter ,
maybe the E clip has fallen off or the upper bearing has already failed
