Why Would You "shim" a 928 Starter?
While doing some maintenance on the '93 GTS 5 speed, I noticed a shim under one bolt of the starter. I have not seen any discussion around Rennlist of shimming a starter. I will say this starter makes and extra "grinding sound" after the key is released which none of my other cars do. I also noticed shinny spots on the flywheel looking at it with clutch slave cylinder removed ( backside of the flywheel looking at it from the rear of the car). Any explanations? Thanks

Hack attempt at fixing something that should be done another way.

Burning Brakes
Most of the high torque mini starters that I have seen on 928's are shimmed. The pinion seams to stick out just a hair to far, that's why it's needed. If you've got both old starter and new mini starter outside next to each other, it's pretty obvious

The thing is it looks like the original OEM starter. I can't figure why the hack but will pull it down in the next couple of days. The grinding I hear reminds me of a sticking Bendix not retracting soon enough.

Hey Mike,
Sent ya an email with some things to check, but wanted to reach ya asap. Don't run the starter anymore except to test. If you are grinding, you are chewing the flywheel gear, and destroying that is a rabbit hole you do not want to go down.

The gap to the lower cover doesn't look right.
Maybe. You'd think something hitting the bracket hard enough to bend it would rip the bracket bolts out of the block. Maybe.

Guys:
I haven't looked yet this morning. Greg, is the starter mounting bracket part of the starter or clutch housing cover (#11 in PET)? I did see that scrape where the pictured bolt goes in.

And it's up to an inch thick, would be a hell of a hit to bend it.

The good news is that 928 Int'l is having their annual half-price sale, the bad news is that it mounts to the back of the block and the flywheel has to come off.
True, but it has this big hole in it-- not a lot of metal between block and that lower starter bolt. I don't think those gouges came from the factory.
