Default Which engine is the smoothest?

Something I have been thinking about since I bought my 928s4 a few years ago, and from time to time since.
The 5l 32 valve does not seem as smooth as I remember my '85 4.7l 16 valve being. That car was so smooth it made me think of a sewing machine, where the 5l feel rougher.
I should note the 22 years that passed since I sold my '85.
So what is the consensus here?
4.5, 4.7, 5.0 or 5.4 for the smoothest ride?

4.5 US L Jetronic gets my vote.

My 89 S4 has the higher compression 10.3:1 5.0L 32V engine and it isn't nearly as smooth as my 81 is.

If you sand the intake of the 5.0, it'll become equally smooth.

Check your motor & transmission mounts.

Good points.

I'm not sure any engine is intrinsically more smooth due to its mechanicals. Could be luck-of-the-draw at having a better balance in the rotating assembly. Which engine has the lightest pistons? That'd help.

An engine that idles more smoothly is mostly about tuning and health of the FI and ignition systems. .

+1
Twin Turbo Todd's Supercharged red car idled so smooth he used to balance a nickle on the intake manifold. This was on collapsed motor mounts (on purpose to lower the engine), with Autronic for engine management.

He doesn't do such a demonstration with the turbocharged car since there isn't a flat surface on the intake, it idles as smooth as the supercharged one.

^This. Big time.

When I replaced my motor mounts, I was amazed at the difference.
For the first day or two, I was not sure if the engine was running at idle or not, with the windows rolled up.

The engines also could have crank dampeners in varyious stages of deterioration.

One of my to-do's is installing an ATI crank dampener onto the GT racecar to make it creamy buttah smoove. It is not rough running at all, just an item I'd like to replace given it's made out of rubber which I am sure has shrunk/hardened, etc. over the years.

Sound interesting - any threads, video etc. about this?
Gearbox and mounts is on the to-do list.

I am happy to finally hear something good about the 4,5L engines (like my '78). Most of the time they get burned as being the least desirable. I found my '78 manual a lot more fun to drive than an S4 I auto once drove.

Not many people say nice things about them because they are low on power which is a bit silly as they have some of the most stout internals from the factory so that can easily be fixed.

They respond really well to any mods as the only way you can go is up with them as the top end of the engine is the limiting factor.

The 4.5 arguably uses the best oil control system Porsche installed in a 928, as they almost never burn oil unlike the 32V cars. Plus with such overbuilt and understressed components, the bearings last an eternity.

I never really understood all of the hate for them.

My 79 always has run smoother than my GTS ever did.
The GTS was gone through top to bottom and never ran as smooth.
Maybe because the 4.5,s were simpler motors? Not sure...?

The GTS had an RMB and an X-pipe with high flow cats. It was a beast for sure w gobs of torque.
i could smoke the 295 section rear tires all the way through first gear.
The 79 4.5 bone stock except for a resonator where the cat used to be. It's smooth as silk and seems more bullit proof. That car can sit for months without a trickle charger on it and start right up on the first crank.
The GTS would usually not have enough juice to fire up if I didn't start it after 2 weeks. (Lots more things on the car to drain it than the 79)

The 79 goes to redline and you barely can hear/feel the engine rev. It probably only "pulls" to 4500 or so, then just revs. No top end whatsoever.
As I said, The Gts would smoke tires through first all the way to redline. Defiantly more muscle car feel.

More than you wanted to know.. it's been nice to get to know the 79 again after selling the Gts. She got no love for 10 years w her younger brother in the garage..
