Alternator pulley
Hello,
Need some help making sure I have the lock washer and other parts in their proper location on the pulley.
Several month ago I bottomed out on a incline with S4 928.
My alternator is making horrible sounds.
I do have the motor sport alternator guard installed but I wonder if the incline allowed my alternator to get hit again.
Anyways, I've got the alternator off the car.
I wanted to make sure the pulley and its washers and lock washers are in their correct position. Properly placed in their correct orientation.
I think it's possible the fan blade is making the noise instead of the actual alternator bearing.
I noticed the replacement washer alternator kit came with more parts than I currently have.
I'm thinking I'm supposed to have one washer underneath the fan to lift it up to the detent. Currently the fan blade is underneath the detent and would possible move around.
Thanks for any help.

Yes. I think it is. I can't post pictures at the moment, but was hoping someone could post a parts diagram of the washers and pulley. I can't find a good one on the web or here. Thanks.

Fan, then spacer (for 85-89), then pulley, then bigass wave washer, then M16 nut. 90+ loses the spacer behind the pulley.

I've got a spare alternator for my 89, so I went out to the garage and checked.
My spare is a rebuilt OEM part. There is a shoulder that's machined into the armature on the Bosch alternator that keeps the cooling fan from rubbing the case of the alternator. So this is how mine is. The fan rests on the shoulder, then the big washer, the pulley and the nut. That machined shoulder sits above the case of the alternator.

Moar pics:
If your fan blades are touching the case, they're bent.

Wow, this is great help. I really appreciate everyone's help. Monday evening I think I need to reshape my fan blade or consider buying another one. Thanks for the great pictures and diagram.

Update: after alternator fan being re shaped
Grinding noise seems to be gone, and all seems good.
Need to drive her a few miles to ensure grinding noise is fixed.
Anyways, thanks for everyone's help!
