Granted the whole assembly has a FIXED length...but the components inside can migrate. I think it has more to do with not loosening the REAR clamp after you do a swap like that....thus allowing all the internals to find a bit of equilibrium so to speak. When i did mine i made sure to loosen the rear after it was all bolted up....I then went back in a month or so later and relieved the front collar again, just for good measure. only takes a small amount of pre-load over a long period of time to muck things up. Been a while since i did it all ..but that is what i recall

Next time I have mine on the lift, I'll check everything. I do have a PKlamp on mine, and it hadn't moved before the original trans went south, and I put it back on after I did the swap. Won't hurt to check.

make sure to check the rear pinch bolt at the trans ,
if you dont it wont matter how tight the front bolt is

On the Landsharkoz forum Bruce Buchanan always stressed the importance of checking both the front and rear bolts, loosening both to release the flex plate and make sure the rear was seated correctly before setting the front.

Ive seen the car too, its nice a clean and in good shape. I think I recall Mark saying it was painted at some point.

Id take it as a project, but my garage is full, the piggy bank is empty, and the car has a less-than desirable (IMHO) burgundy interior.

I have a spot in my garage and happen to like the burgundy interior so I bought the car from Mark. Replacing the motor will be a nice winter project and given the condition of the car it will be totally worth it. I have an 88 5 speed that is cumbersome to drive in rush-hour traffic so I'm looking forward to an auto to take back and forth to work occasionally. My 5 speed is just like BCs, a twin to this car that has led a completely different and somewhat harder life.

Congrats and well bought! Keep a running thread here on the car as you get it road-ready again. Pics make the story better.

Way to go Jerry. Hauling from LA to MD is gonna cost a bit. Roger has an engine for it, if you want to save some labor, just give him a call. It's ready to ship and ready to install. Rather than pull your 5sp engine with matching numbers(I presume) it would be smarter to get Roger's S4 engine, put it on a stand, do some catch up and detail work then toss it in over winter. then you an recoup some money by selling off bits of the TBF engine. That's what I was planning before I bought a plane, rather than this car.

Thanks for the tip, I have sent an email off to Roger. I plan to keep my 5 speed as is. Its a work in progress that only needs some cosmetic bits and a paint job. For the new car, I was planning on a short block but a reasonably priced whole motor might be better.

Sounds great! Love it when a plan comes together. Mark got some cash, car stays in good fettle, new owner with dedication to fix up, Roger sells an engine, and we get to pick over the old engine.

Everybody rides. If I was heading east soon I'd grab up the engine and deliver, but I have no trips that way planned.
