Hi Nate, R&T did a story on the AMG MB GTS and the Porsche Carrera GTS awhile back and said this:
The AMG was clearly designed from the beginning to take the fight to the Porsche, from the faux center-lock lug-bolt covers (which, this being Mercedes, have an exact torque specification of 22 lb-ft) to the fastback body shape that looks deliberately 911-esque at a distance. I'm certain it will sway some 911 buyers the same way the Panamera has picked off stragglers from the S-class demographic. But it's no Nine Eleven. So what is it? In the course of enthusing about the AMG's virtues, my Marine aviator friend, Jim, happens to mention another German sports car he's always liked. All of a sudden the realization hits me. V-8 power, wide shoulders, self-shifting transmission, fastback profile . . . Now it makes sense. The 911 Carrera GTS is the best 911 I've seen in a while, and the Mercedes-AMG GT S is a near-perfect successor to a very different Porsche. As I recollect, they called it the 928.
Here's the full article from Nov 2015: http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cult...-porsche-911/. I'm not sure a rear engine Porsche can ever feel like a front engine Porsche. Even though the rear engine car has been tamed significantly, there is still a difference. I think the R&T article has it right.

^ YES. I'm 100% on board with that thinking. My BMW car guy friend clued me into the recent R&T article this morning and I told him exactly that. That the more true (spiritual) successor is the AMG GT S. I'd be curious to hear from anyone here that has driven either or both an AMG GT and or 911 GTS to get their take on which one if any reminds them of what the 928 might have become 22 years after the last one rolled off the line.

It is somehwhat ironic for Porsche, but I think the 928 has very little to do with Porsche, even though it is the only Porsche that is 100% Porsche.
Truth be told, if I were to replace my 928 with a non-928, I would buy a used Aston Martin V8 or maybe the Mercedes mentioned above (the latter subject to a test drive of course).

Wasn't the "Mercedes AMG GT S is the new 928" article in R&T also? Why yes, I think it was:

Somebody over there thinks about 928s a lot and likes a good brouhahas. That guy should join Rennlist.
Edit: Sorry - I see Linderpat scooped me on the Mercedes - I didn't refresh before posting. But the sentiment is still correct.

I would trade my 928 for an AMG GT every day of the week and twice on Sunday.....

The 911 above is a cab and I'm not a fan of ragtops, but it is still sexier than a 928 with all those nice curves.
This rendering gets my vote for a future-build 928 which gives it some much-needed curves:

Oh my gosh is that car beautiful!

If the AMG GT S has a depreciation curve anything like the 928 did, we can all own one soon enough!
Hmmmmm, what color???

Drooman and I have often discussed what a 928 would have evolved into if Porsche had continued developing the concept...
This seems the closest yet!

The proportions of the MB AMG GT are wacked. That hood is way, way to long and by comparison the butt is way too short. (I know, I know they did that on purpose in order to get all of the engine behind the front axle so that they could have a mid-(forward)-engine architecture.)
But, it only resembles a 928 as if through a fun-house mirror.
Last, IMO, the 991 GTS is not the modern 928. The 991 Turbo is. Naw... the GTS can be the 928 and the Turbo is the 928S.
