Default The Shear Terror....

Hi All

I was just organizing some repair pics for my car which I am cataloging and came across these recent ones from my 1991 928 S4 with 116K miles (auto trans) which had the driveshaft shear off during a leisurely drive.

May it NEVER happen to you!!

Prior to Removal....Yikes!

The Replacement arrived. This one through 928 International

I wonder why they machine the weak spot into it at the end of the splines. That's right where yours sheared in two.

Adds an interesting twist to an otherwise-normal drive.

make sure you have a good set of spark plugs and plug and coil wires,
NOTE an oil filled well can short out the plug
if one of the ignition systems shuts down,
then this is the result, running on half an engine.

Yes its not really limp home mode, its your hint that its time for a flatbed to the repair facility

Keep thinking about the end game and how much fun it's going to be. Been there and still doing that.

They break at both the front and the back. Seems like 90 and 91 were the bad years - not a good design. I was pretty unhappy at the time, but now I consider it a 928 rite of passage.

Hope you saved the stump. Whenever I see it I get nostalgic. I inserted mine into the replaced flexplate clamp and keep them as a souvenir. I look at that stump to remind me about real work whenever replacing a heater hose or vacuum line seems daunting.
