wire that runs on top of bell housing
1985 928S Automatic 41K original miles and purchased from original owner, an aquaintance.
I noticed while checking the flex plate tension that a wire that runs right over the rectangular opening on top of bell housing had been chewed off by a pack rat while this car was stored for 15 years in a wharehouse in Albaquerque. I cannot get to it to see where the wire goes? Any thoughts on what this wire is for? The Radio and electric lock button on dash do not work. The AC compressor clutch, cruise, and cigarette lighter are untested as of yet.
Thanks in advance!
Proud new owner, Joe M.
P.S. I am desperately trying not to drive until the belt gets refreshed even though it has less than 2k miles on current belt from 16 years ago.

Joe,

What you see as a wire is probably the vacuum line that follows the torque tube back to the vacuum modulator on the side of the transmission. If the vacuum is not attached or has breaks/holes and does not hold vacuum, your shifts will be much harder (rougher) than normal. That vacuum line originates at the 5 way and proceeds over the top of the bell housing where it meets a hard line which goes toward the back to the transmission.
The easiest way I have found to replace that line is to connect a new line at the 5 way and feed the line over the top of the bell housing. and down beside the torque tube on the right. Remove the small heat shield on the right side and reach over the top of the torque tube and feel the hard line. It is snapped into a clip which holds it to the torque tube. Unsnap the line and gently pull it down to the side of the torque tube to the point that you can see the end. Remove the old vacuum line, and cut the new one to fit. Attach the new soft line to the hard line, snap the hard line back into the clip, replace the heat shield and you should be good to go.
Good Luck!

Or it's not the vacuum line and its the old (no longer used) timing test sensor
And it can be removed or left as is, as it is not needed.
Yes and a Pic would help ID what you are asking about
