Need help figuring out original color of my '88.
My '88 5speed 220 car restoration has begun. However, the biggest piece of the puzzle missing is the original paint code. All traditional methods, that I'm aware of, to identify original specs are missing. The car has been repainted at least 2 times. Currently, the car shows black but I feel at some point in its life it may have been red or perhaps originated in red.
I just want to bring the car back to its original color.

That second pic would indicate to me that it left the factory guards red. Carefully unhook the sunroof motor cover and see what you find in there. The cover tabs are easily damaged, so be gentle.

You could also order a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and that will tell you its original colour.

Or post the VIN to the options thread and get the data from Porsche that way.
EDIT: Turns out that paint colors are not included in the options listings via PET.

Okay, called Porsche and they were very helpful. They said the paint color was A1 Black and the interior is VN, which I guess that means "partial leather, black."
I just don't understand where the read came from under the carpets. Perhaps a weird color of primer Porsche used for a very short time?

based on the fenderwell picture that machine was red,
if the car was black then the fenderwell would also be black.
FWIW with some scrubbing on the fenderwell paint with simple green,
you will get some nice clean red paint

Do a little more digging on the car ... Porsche records have been known to be wrong!
Look for overspray under the car on the body deadener, and in all sorts of other places that only a full empty shell spray gets to on the inside, including hidden spaces.

That VIN may have left the factory black, but that car did not!
