Manual-Equipped Porsche 928s , dont sell yet!

The 928 is a Grand Tourer by nature and hence the automatic makes more sense for its mission. The manual makes sense if you have a performance oriented version like the 86.5, CS, SE or GT (or the original 4.5L which was underpowered and the auto made it worse).

Interesting numbers though. Especially considering that the majority of 928s were not special order cars, but spec'd out by the factory and sent to the dealers.

For US 86.5 production for which there is VIN/options data, there were 1408 automatics and 499 5-speeds. So 499/1907 = 26.1%.
The problem with that is that there were 2010 86.5s produced for the US/Canada market, so there are 103 cars that are not listed in the PET options database. So the actual proportion of 5-speeds will be minimally different. So put it at 25-27%, slightly less than the 86.0s. Perhaps Erkka, Samuel or Dave S have a more complete dataset for 86.5.

If you look closely, part of the reason is that there were double the number of 84 US autos vs the year before and the year after. Actual numbers of 5 speeds isn't all that much different.

Could be that when the shifter bushings turn to mush and the reverse lockout and return spring break, that's a common point where people start to develop a bad opinion of the car and they stop taking care of it. They sell it, and it changes hands a few times, the new owners treat it like a cheap car and do awful things to it, they decide that repair xyz isn't worth the money, and eventually it gets parted out.

I have one and it would take well above what it is really worth to get it from me.

I think that I'm really connected to these cars.
Found a 1989 CS for sale into an ad in 1997. Bought it in 1999. I was the only one interested by this badly equiped 928 at the moment.
Had to let her go during my divorce. My ex-wife enjoys this 928...
Found a lightly optioned 1987 S4 to play with after the divorce.
And found this 1988 CS by luck in May.
In fact, I think that we were both lucky. Me to find a CS into my price range. Her, to be saved from years of negligence. The past owner wasn't aware that this was a 1988 CS...

Always wanted to find a nice manual 928. Guess I'll be looking again.
