Causes of rear quarter window trim kinking?
I had assumed what is shown in the photo is due to improper installation after replacing the seal. However, at Frenzy I was told this can happen due to age and sun exposure. Given the large number of 928s at the event I was able to observe kinks like this on other 928s with no known history of quarter window removal/seal replacement. I had planned to remove and try to reinstall the trims using the dish soap method that has worked great for others, but would like to know before I start if new trims are the best solution.

Do '88's have plastic quarter window trims or metal? It's not clear to me which years are plastic and which are aluminum- AFAIK they're all metal 78-86.5. They're plastic in '89, but metal on my '90 and '93. PET is not helpful RE: any year- specific distinction.

Hi Rob - Mine are plastic. I picked up a used plastic set at Frenzy a few years ago....I think from a GTS. I notice the trims on my 88 are matte black. The spare set are glossy black. I'm not sure if the difference is due to weathering of the trims on my 88, or if later cars had glossy trims.
But I had assumed my 88 had metal and several here said they should be plastic. Your observations throw doubt on the plastic assumption. Perhaps Porsche had some metal and plastic in the parts bins for awhile and whatever was on top got on the car. So I'll check what's on my 88 more carefully.

I do have original plastic trims on my 88. I noticed they appear to have pulled out of the two metal corner trims from both ends - indicating shrinkage. And this also would account of them kinking on the inside of the curved lower piece. They are pulling out a bit, too.
The spare pieces I bought are in better condition, but are also starting to warp in the same places. It appears the previous owner of these removed and replaced them pretty close to first signs of the shrinking and kinking.
I have four spare upper trims (2 for each side) and a pair of lower pieces. May try heating and reforming them, but I suspect either heat and/or UV is the cause.

Thanks Tony... The more data points the better. I noticed a lot of weathered cars did not have the problem, and cars in better condition that did.
