I'm curious how a new owner knows the car is actually in 2nd gear, not first. I was for a long time convinced that I had the same problem until I realized I was wrong.... I'm curious what rpm and speed is the first shift point after going from dead-stop

Tarek,

Shift RPMs are throttle dependent; the more throttle the later the shift. From a dead stop at light throttle count how many times the transmission shifts. If you feel 3 shifts you have a 1st gear start valve body if you feel 2 shifts you have a 2nd gear start valve body. With a 2nd gear start VB; at full throttle with kick down activated the transmission should start in 1st gear.

Steve,

thanks for the write-up. I was wondering if Paul went through all the gears accurately...and was wondering if he did have 1st gear, but not 4th... yet concluded he didn't have 1st gear after 2 shifts.

I'm not familiar with the A/T so this may sound physically impossible...but had to ask

I have to agree with Jim , There is no one that knows these transmissions like Steve C. He has been tremendous help with mine and my brothers car 82 and 84 respectively, I trust him and this board more than any local shop. if you are anywhere near his location I would highly recomend having him look at it. Steve has always taken the time to explain problems and he wont let anyone at his shop but himself work on these cars.

OK. Thanks for all the interest. Here is a complete detail of what I have done. When I first drove the car it just felt like a dog until it hit about 40 mph. This is like any OHC motor the higher the revs the more power. Well the stupid thing did not shift until it hit 80 mph or 5850 RPM. I did not know, I had never driven a Porche but I knew it was suppose to be a 6 second car to 60. This was my dream car when I was in High School and have always wanted one. Anyway I dug out the manual and went to looking. OK I have a 4 speed but it only shifts twice. It does not shift before 80 mph when at full throttle. OK I went to 928 international and looked at the tips and FAQ's. I adjusted everthing that I can adjust EXCEPT THE VACUUM MODULATOR. I read it controlled the firmness of the shifts and it shifted fine so I did not want to mess with that. I have not removed the solenoid in the rear of the tranny. I have Jim moorehouse sending his cd so I can trace fluid and electrical routes. I would love to be able to fix it without replacing the tranny. I have tried 2, 3, D,. It will flat launch in reverse. I can't get off the line. A school bus will get me off the line until I hit a 4500 RPM's. We dropped the pan, changed fluid, added trans X, traced vacuum line traced electrical lines, checked the throttle cable to tranny. It has to be internal. Oh yea bought a new 48 buck relay, that did not work either. I have pretty good mechanical skills, I just need that little clue that I do not know about. Something that may be different from american made. Thanks Guys. Yall are great

Steve, thanks for the help. Reading what I have tried, where would you start looking. Can the valve body be rebuilt? I drive it like my 68 stang. FAST and I do not mind turning it to 6200. I have done everything to get into frist. Power Braking, slamming the throttle, roll backs, everything. WHo can I send the valve body to, to have it rebuilt. Can I change out the solenoid?

Just FYI Bill Ball has stated exactly what my 85s2 does. It starts off in 1st no matter what forward gear the selector is in. And there is a jolt.

Well Like I said, mine will not achieve first gear. I only get a jolt @ 80 and 125. I would love to feel it in first. TO much power not to enjoy.
