Default Re manufactured Bosch alternator... duct won't fit Help!

Just attempted installation of my newly re manufactured alternator... externally the same, but the wires are clocked differently on the back, and the holes don't allow the duct to fit on the back. This alternator was listed as a direct replacement for my 78 928... I should be able to use original parts to reinstall...

Out of curiosity, which Bosch is it?

It may also be that you need the newer version of the duct.

Air Duct: 92860313304
Gasket: 92860313502
Harness Grommet: 92861286502

Default Alternator

Bosch does not make a proper alternator for the 78-84 928

I have never done this exact alternator. I have done many others in the past. I would think you could removed and turn the back housing to be clocked correctly. I'm sure someone will chime in. I'll also keep looking to try and get you some photos. Pictures are awesome

Your car most likely came with a Marshall but they were superseded by the Perris Rhone/ Valeo

The original is a Marchal. This Bosch alternator is AL115x. Should I send this one back, or invest in a new duct? Wires mount fine, but the wire grommet location and duct don't work.

That’s an Audi alternator which will work without the cooling cover and they do not make one for it

Interestingly, there is a sticker on the side of the alternator that warns that the duct must be used or you risk overheating the alt. Too bad it won't fit. None of the later ducts work?

I run these without a duct. No belly pan, either.

Where did you get the alternator?

I suspect the PO got his where I get mine: your friendly, local auto-parts store. Cheap and no shipping. A quick search shows Autozone sells a 75A unit for $65.

Got it from Pelican... I have had good experience with them, and their shipping is lightning fast. Previous owner had the original alternator "rebuilt" 25 years ago before it went into a barn. I may take the original to a starter/ alternator shop to see if they can repair it reasonably. Car is so original, and being a 78 5 speed with low miles, I'd hate to not use the original parts. I thought if I could rig the duct onto this alternator I would use it, but it looks to be impossible given the links above... (Thank you).

You have two choices if you want to keep it as close to stock as possible.
Use 928 603 114 01 Valeo Alternator and we sell for $380.
Or use the later Bosch AL325X $189.95) but you will also need the duct, gasket and maybe a resistor.

Shame on Pelican for not knowing that but then again they are not a 928 specialist supply.
