Being this is an S4 motor it will use bolts, not studs. Buy new bolts from Porsche and proceed worry free.

Yes, good advice to replace chains and tensioner pads.

An S4 has head bolts, and you can reuse them at least once. I'm sure some will state otherwise.

Engine designation.

All 928 V8s are "M28" motors. The 2nd number is the specific engine, with odd numbers being manual trans and even numbers (like yours) being auto trans.

Link to a chart that shows them all:

Hey guys so I was able to remove camshafts, chain, and removed head to only the driver-side for now. I'm just posting an update and some questions for you guys about what I'm seeing on the heads and pistons.
There's alot of build up on the heads, both intake portions and exhaust sides, and tops of pistons have a thick layer of black build up on them. By the way, I will post pics so you guys can see.
So first question, is that build up caused by the oil that engine takes in? When I removed intake there was so much oil inside of it. I need to fix that issue too but first this. Or is that carbon build up normal?
I know I have another couple of questions but I have to book it to work so maybe later.
Thanks.
