Default Fridays project

I was going through some of the previous owners service records and couldn't find when the transmission fluid and filter was last changed.

I noticed the car would jerk pretty good putting it in drive or revers. I kinda figured the modulator or bowden cable was out of adjustment or something I had replaced the vacuum line by the fire wall previously and the one by the transmission still looks half way decent.

But I figured if I'm going to do something I should do the filter and fluid so I could have a current record of it being done. So I drained the pan and the converter and dropped the trans pan. I let it drip for a little bit while I cleaned and painted the pan. I'm kinda a clean freak and there was a spot that had a little surface rust. I hate reinstalling dirty parts back on a car.

Got the filter on, new pan gasket and filled with fluid"start car, turn off, fill some more".

As I have read here before fix or adjust one thing at a time then test. good advice. I took the car out and the car doesn't jerk when putting it into forward or reverse.

I think my car likes the attention of being worked on.

Nice when a cheap fix works, I'd suggest reading up on how to fill to the correct level though as it's important.

From what I read it basically said don't let the trans suck the resivor dry. I filled it up, start the car for about 2 seconds and turn off and refill. Did this till it stopped taking the trans fluid. Filled to the proper mark for cold trans. Drove it around on the highway for about 5 miles. Came home turned off car checked the level. Read correct at the warm full mark. Was there a step I missed?

The engine needs to be running when you check the level, after selecting D & R and leaving in each for a minute.

Okay, while on the jack stands I did put it in drive and revers for about 20 seconds each. I checked it while it was in neutral and the level was lower than the cold full mark. But when I turned the car off to fill it and got back under the car the fluid level was at the cold full mark. After I drove it and turned it off the level was at the hot full.

If I fill it while in neutral to the full mark, will it over flow the resivor when I turn it off. It doesn't look like there is much room in there to allow the back flow of fluid.

thanks james

Leave it running when you fill it. The level check and fill are best done while the transmission is up to temperature, so a good time is immediately following a decent drive. Keep the car level of course as you do this. Add fluid slowly as you monitor level in the reservoir, so you can get it up to the full mark but not overfull.

On my 4 speed auto box, the difference between min and full marks works out to about 8 ounces of fluid. There's no easy way to stuff 8 ounces of fluid into the reservoir with the engine not running. It is possible to do it through the hydraulic fill port if you have the fitting and a pump. You'll still need to check it with fluid hot and engine running.
