Default S4 New Larger Shoes

This is a project that was supposed to be done in the spring oh well.

It was time for new tires which is always an opportunity. I had purchased the car with a set of HRE wheels on it. After driving the car for a while and not being particularly impressed with the handling, I did some research on the forum and quickly realized that the offsets on the wheels were completely wrong. Obviously older 911 wheels.

If you want to see a picture of the wheels before modification here is a link.

I wasn't all that fond of the looks of the front wheels, tires were really stretched and the wheels hung out too wide from the body.

So apart the wheels came and with a caliper and a spreadsheet and the wheel offset calculator I began figuring out what I could build with the lowest purchase price.

In the end I ended up switching the faces from front to back, and purchasing new barrels for the front. My end result for wheels was front wheels at 9.4" offset 68 and rears at 10.4" offset 55

Everyone was blowing out Continental extreme contacts DW so I picked up a set of 245-35 for the front and 285-30 for the rears at very favorable prices.

As the wheels were apart I took off the original finish and had them anodized, unfortunately one of the lips had been replaced previously and the coloring was off. The option was to start purchasing lips to see what kind of a match I could get or go darker on the lips, I chose darker.

Installed them today and I'm happy with the installed results, although still trying to get used to the new aggressive look of the wheels and tires. IMHO they make the car look a lot smaller. The rear fenders needed the most gentle of coaxing to clear. No issues at all with the front.

Took it for a ride and was really impressed with the improvement in tracking over the manholes I've been running this summer, and the manholes were noticeably better than these wheels before the rebuild.

I have one little problem, there is not enough depth on the front wheels for the wheel cap, by just a little, I could space the wheels out a little but would loose some of the offset I paid a lot for, The other option is some kind of alternative cap for the wheel or a shallower cap on the hub, I haven't searched yet for those.

If anyone has suggestions I'm certainly interested.

Also should I be looking at alternative alignment settings with the wider wheels and tires?

Enjoy,

Lance

You can install a GTS dustcap and you wont have that issue anymore.
