Default Shifter coupler boot repair; rubber glue

I started an earlier post about having a very sloppy stick shift lever. Many great ideas from the community led me to the rear coupler and the discovery that my bushes had evaporated with no sign of ever existing!

Roger supplied me with some new polygraphite round holed bushes, and the transformation is just amazing. Best $14.00 I ever spent. I just thought it was suppose to have all that free play.

As I read in many other posts, the boot covering the coupler is a real PITA, and a new boot is pretty pricey.

My original boot was in better shape than I thought and I was hoping to reuse it, but I could not pull it back to access the coupler. Ended up making a slit with a razor on the larger diameter section, that covers the coupler and peeled it back to access the screws.

After everything was back in place, I went to a lawnmower shop and got a used 3" tire tube, cut a section out, and placed it over the slit portion of the boot.

The key was using Bob Smith IC-2000 rubber glue designed specifically for rubber to rubber application. Can be found at Hobbytown USA(and other places). This stuff is amazing for any rubber to rubber bonding. Only drawback is that even unopened, the glue has a very short shelf life.

If I ever need to take trans or TT out, I will replace with the proper boot, but for now, it appears this will keep dust and dirt and whatever out of the coupler.
