No, it's the other way around, Chrysler is owned by Benz in perhaps one of the worst trading deals in US history.

As to Porsche not wishing to step on other GmBH auto lines, all bets are off, as VW, Audi, BMW and MB have crossed over into the sport performance arena, leaving Porsche no choice but to abandon their traditional position and begin mfg. a sedan. You can also put money on it being a well engineered vehicle that will outperform most others as well as take a beating and keep on running.

-The pictures that Nicole posted were from a magazine article, circa 1989 [Car and Driver/Road and Track/MotorTrend or some such banality], and were only pictures of a concept car.

If you look closely at the 989, you start to notice the length of the car....which I suspect in full-on side views was a bit awkward. I bet it looked like some sort of stretch limo version of a 911 when all was said and done, and the people in charge nixed the whole thing.

Any sort of 4 door is going to have to have had to worked around this obvious and difficult problem. Carefull styling will make it work, just like the detailing on the Alfa 156, which is a 4 door sold in Europe that looks almost like a two door coupe.

Cost: Just because it costs 100K pounds in the UK doesn't mean that it will cost $174k in the US! Many times things cost the same in Dollars and Pounds. The UK is determined to deny the Euro [sorry in advance to stir things up in this totally separate and intruiging debate!], so things automatically cost more than they would normally. For instance, I bought CD's at music shops in Nottingham for 18 pounds [ouch!], simply because they weren't available in the US [a few rare Asia compilations.......]. But other CD's were the same, and in the US they would have retailed for $18.

I suspect that at the high end, a 4 door turbo Porsche would go out the door for in the neighborhood of $100-125K. This 4 door car simply couldn't sell for the thought-of $175k when the new 5 series BMW [admittedly an inferior car, especially in looks!] goes out for less than $60k.

Incidently, my best friend Lucy just ordered a BMW 545i, for May delivery [she turns 40~ urk!]. More on this later....

Just for grins look up the Bentley Continental Gt coupe W-12 550 hp base price about $150,000 .....Built for VW , VW engine simply stretch it into a 4 door and add the Porsche "corporate front end" , Cayenne engine and you are there ! the small side window/ high belt line is very much the same as the "photo" which started this thread . Foriegn exchange rates dollar to euros to pounds trade in a very efficient market with the dollar at something like an 11 year low any bank can will give you about $1.75 for a single Pound . The last normal GTS had a list price of about $100,000 in 1995 ... so a twin turbo 500 hp 200 mph all wheel drive "successor" in 2005/6 should only be $100,000 to 125,000 ????

Yes, Jim it should. The Japanese have changed the pricing game and the Germans have come way down in pricing to challenge the Japanese in value. That's why the SL55AMG is a relative bargain at 493 HP and just over 120 (give or take a few K). Adjusting dollars for inflation, high end cars are cheaper today (and in MB case, show it). The Bentley GT is a great example of "value" in the super high end. Compare it to the Rolls (a german product as well) and its hard to understand how BMW is going to charge 100k more for a refrigerator on wheels.

Re the 989

this was actually in Porsche and 911 World Magazine about 7 or 8 months ago. It was actually a front engined V8, despite the 996esque back end. Was due to make production, but i think the production line it was supposed to be made on got the Boxter instead. Shame really, nice looking cat that probably would have depreciated quite nicely by now...
