While that is a harsh comment I totally agree.
Me too, after reading the history of the car least expected to see an S4 front end and a chevy replacing a Euro motor.

What a terrible way to destroy a classic car with provenance.
My perspective, of course

Agree with Shawn. Make the car into your vision and enjoy it. You probably won't do all this if you didn't find all those surprises after you've purchased it. Keep us posted! Also, I hope you kept that euro twin dizzy engine.

Definitely a cool back story, and WOW that's a lot of red!!!! I have to agree though that it should have been returned to stock. You can find any number of older 928's for sub $5k that would've been a great starting point for a custom LS build. Still, thanks for sharing the story and pics.

While I agree this car is a special animal. Once the paint was no longer original (before the current owner had the car) there was no making it 100% right again. Well, at least not for any less than a kings ransom.

I have a VHS documentary which highlighted a special build 930S Turbo on the mid-80's painted this color. The representative at Andial Porsche talking about the build focused on the paint work. He said Porsche hates this color, they crush up so many pearls it's next to impossible to lay down a good paint job. He said Porsche painted / stripped and re-painted the car 6-7 times before they was happy with the results.

There is a 951 I saw years ago, the build sheet showed an extra cost like $12k just for the paint job, back in 1987!!!

Audi used to paint a lot of cars pearl white in the late 80's early 90's, but not anywhere near close to this caliber from Porsche. Any ding or scratch the whole car had to be stripped / resprayed to be whole. It was impossible to match. A minor fender bender = car was totaled.

So while this car has awesome history, it was never going to be as special as it was the day the factory finished it.

It's hands down my favorite color on most cars, but I'd never want to own one unless I had such a huge car collection it was my C&C trailer queen.

Thank you for the comments, both positive and negative, i have been lurking here long enough to be able to predict who would lean which direction and who is always the troll. The reality is that it is my car and I am doing what suits me, I care nothing at all about the resale value because it will be my kids that sell it (if they choose) after I am dead.
I have every part that came off the car and intend to keep them for the forseeable future. The LS is out of it at the moment and I am considering modifying the M28/22 and putting it back in. The reason it came out is because it was so GD slow. It is the slowest car I own - to 100mph - and while it ran nicely on the freeway at 3000rpm in town it was almost painful. I have since learned by lurking that it probably needed a serious tune up and the TV cable for the trans adjusted, hence thoughts of reworking it. Then I think, 430 hp in a lighter, smaller package and when the hood is closed no one will know, and there I am headed the other way. We shall see, you can follow along as you like.

I am in the " It is your car" camp. The car was decaying. You saved it. We are not all preservationists. If it feels good, do it! And feel joy, not remorse.

Like you, I am also torn about putting an aftermarket euro s CIS engine into my OB '78 5 spd. Keep resale collectible value or go for a quicker and more powerful car? If you have the funds, go for the LS-conversion! I have always been intrigued by it and Tony has it done right! Good luck in your decision b/c it is not easy.

Keep us posted-Hoi

It's your car. Do with it what you wish.

The idea of "provenance" with this one is pretty laughable.

Some Saudi sheik owned it? So what.

Neither Charlie Sheen's nor Paul Stanley's 928s generated any real jump in price because of who owned them.

Not if it was original paint. Even with a repaint, the fact that it's still one of "the" pearl cars is pretty special. IMO more so than the Weissach's people go crazy over.

I've been debating for 20 years to repaint my Mocha 81 this color (well, the closest you can get without going bonkers). I would love to see this car in person once completed.

Provenance is not what I am looking for, I don't care. It is the car's story. I bought it because I like it, I am going to fix it because I like it the way it will be when I am done. I would like to put the m28/22 back in it, but it will cost me probably 10K to get to 325-350HP and I have a paid for package putting out 430HP at the crank. It is a dilemma, but one that can be rectified in time as I can afford to do what I want to do with the original engine, meanwhile I have a driveable car...
Hacker-Pschorr, I hope to make a big loop of the country in a few year, Wisc. will be on my list. My kids grandparents family farm is outside Eau Claire.

Original paint is far more "originality" than "provenance".

I agree that if it was original paint, then keeping it original would be a much higher priority (from a "history" standpoint as well as a "value" one).

But it's not, hasn't been for a long time and was not well done. Damned shame, but that's what it is.

I am confused: How can 430 hp be slow?

I suspect that was a reference to the original motor.

Yup, I meant the original engine. I just had the LS sitting in there to see how it fit. It is out now while the car is being repainted.
Just read a thread about super charging the 16v. Wonder how that would affect this low compression engine?
