I would be very happy if I could transplant the 6 speed tiptronic tranny from my Cayenne Turbo S into the 928 whether it is theoretically possible remains to be seen but even if it was the cost to do so would be prohibitive.

Upgrading the power output to achieve the "missing performance" is possible but in the end I figured that to do so would involve at least $20k plus and concluded that I was better off purchasing the Turbo S which for straight line performance it delivers in spades and can still hold its own in corners. I still prefer to drive the 928 with its limitations but the way mine is set up in corners it is still hard to beat.

In the end I concluded that it was better to enjoy the 928 for what it is rather than what it is not and if and when I need to get the spanners out I have the Turbo S to play with.

I highly doubt that would be feasible.

In theory, anything is possible, but for the modern Tip 6 speed, there is a lot of communication, via computer modules, between the engine and trans.

Without it, the trans wouldn't function properly, if at all.

All a 928 has is the vacuum & bowden cable.

To cross over from another thread (the "Hagerty Values" one), the 928 was a complicated car for its time.

But compared to a modern computer controlled car, it's very, very simple.

Nothing is integrated on a 928.

EVERYTHING is integrated on a Cayenne (or other modern car).

... and that is why it would be prohibitively expensive

A 7G tropic merc gearbox from the 2003 onwards would be interesting if only a pipe dream.

If you want a rocket 928, supercharge it! I did with my 89 S4, and it's wild on the highway, yet very strreetable. You'd never know the blower is in there till ya mash on the go pedal.

My Pantera, is monster HP, and very crude. Today it's worth crazy money, and we'll probably sell it in the near future. It's been totally upgraded with a supercharged modern modular engine, and RBT 6 speed, but it's still a GoKart, with A/C.

An Aston is in my future.
