Even Auto zone sells a rebuild (fwiw)
Regulator should be external, 2 screws and she's out.
Big Three and local alt shop can supply them... price em' out.
That Paris Rhone alt. - if you have one is a piece of crap, IMO- seems to literally smoke the diodes completely off the unit.

I just took mine in for a rebuild (Paris-Rhone). Trying to drive those new S4 radiator fans has been a challenge for the alt. The dashboard voltmeter would dip below 10V when both fans are running with the engine idling. Anyways, the rebuild guy said the alternator was in rough shape with lots of worn parts. I bought a new one from him for $295 which I didn't think was too out of line. I've owned this one it for 7 years without a problem. Don't know of it is the original or not. Auto Zone was quoting me $175 for a rebuilt Paris Rhone but couldn't tell me when they could get thier hands on one. The Bosch type were in stock for the same price.

I just replaced my Paris Rhone rebuilt unit at Auto Zone too! Also got a "Lifetime" waranty on it! Yep, cost $200 and if it ever fails, just go to any Auto Zone and get another one for nothing, nada, zilch. el-zero!
So far its working ,OK!

What's actually happening with this alternator? -'red' light on?/ (any) output voltage above battery voltage?/ battery discharged?/etc.
If in doubt, you must pull the alt. - at this stage, it can't hurt to do a few checks prior to supporting the economy with your $400.
Spin the shaft to check bearings. Next, pull the regulator & attached brush holder - could be as simple as worn brushes, a $5-10 fix (or dirt/crud packed in and around the brushes).
If you take the alt .to a NAPA/etc. for a free test spin, a reasonable tech. can pinpoint either regulator, triad, or power/invertor diode problems.
Generic regulators @$20 work well , and have a little better output voltage - just transfer the brush holder.
If you're up to going inside to check diodes, mark the sections prior to disassembly...
You may well fix it or at least, pinpoint the problem (after you're sure it is the alternator). If all fails, well, the alt. had to come off anyway.
good luck.
