This was the 1983 928S I recently gave to my brother. Luckily he was going about 5 MPH as he was turning a corner at the time. It scared the hell out of him. The damage was minimal (ball joint itself, some marks on the wheel well and a slightly bent fender in the lower rear corner of the wheel opening.
I am a dumbass for thinking that the AL ball joints were put on cars after Vin # 404 in 1983. DOHHHH!!!! It's 404 in 84.
Regards.

There was a nasty 928 accident a couple of years ago on the freeway near San Mateo, CA because of this. I think the picture is still on the DEVEK website some where. Oddly enough, I was stuck in the traffic that accident caused after just having my 928 for a few months.

This is SO weird!
Most of the ball joints that separated appear to have done so at low speeds. I'll relate the story of my PO again. He was also in San Mateo going 130 mph. He got to his destination. Parked the car. Walked up to the house. The car then slumped over with the wheel tilted over.
And now I'll rant. What the hell good is the DMV, except for money grubbing and nabbing a few criminals, if they can't send technical bulletins to those who may be driving cars without the knowledge of a dangerous situation. I hate the DMV.
Be glad it wasn't a nose gear strut. Many people have landed airplanes on their noses. Bent blades, bent crankshafts, twisted landing gear, etc.

Yes, it will be documented and placed on my website. Then I will try to do a modest home alignment as seen done with excellent results by Jay Kempf on a 1993 GTS in Sweden prior to a Euro 928 2003 Nurburging floging. I'll let someone else document that one.

That don't sound right. Anyway, lucky it wasn't at 120 mph.
Can anyone post a link to 928 at which parts these are to replace. I'm sure my 83 needs them.

Was there ever a recall on this? It seems to me this could be a VERY dangerous condition if total faiture happend at any time other than at slow speed. Recalls remain in effect for the life of a car if the defective part is still on it, no?

Probelems? Why? I gave it to my brother, so I still have a vested interest in the car. Every case I have heard of this failure happened at slow speeds, just as Greg K. has stated and added to my knowledge of this failure.

Well, there was at least one on a CA freeway at speed. There's a picture of the piled up car on Devek's web site.
However, most of them seem to happen when the car isn't movieng fast, or is sitting still. Often when it goes around a conor, or when the brakes are hit it seems. And thats not just on the 928, but seems like everything. I'm guessing thats when a ball joint is the most stressed for some reason?
Many cars have ball joints, and they fail from time to time. It's like driveing, evencaly things break. If I understand it correctly, there was not a recall, but a Technical Bullitan. Basicly, it doesn't have to be replaced, but if your changeing it anyways, put the steel ones in.
Anyways, good day.
