9 quarts of oil?,
8 quarts is what is required with a filter change.
spark plugs may be fouled, oil could've been sucked through the vacuum lines, throttle body probably has a pool of oil in it.

i Guess this was my worry. The next day I took it back and they were looking it over. I asked if he could siphon some of the oil out to bring the level back to about midline on the dipstick. He drained about a quart out to get to that point.
I admitted I have no idea what happened but would like to have some more specific ideas to suggest in order to start trouble shooting. I asked about checking the alternator wires by the filter.
Is there something easy I can suggest for them to check to see if this is what is happening? not sure how easy it is to check the vacuum lines/ throttle body and if they would even be willing to do that. would over filling by a quart really result in this?
sorry, i am NOT a mechanic as much as I wish I were!

If you have to make suggestions how to diagnose something simple like then I would strongly suggest your find another mechanic.

When I called and tried to again point out that they HAD drained a quart and a half since they filled it ( they drained off another hald today while looking it over) he told me " you arent going to pin this on us when the car has maintenance needs". So its purely coincindence that the car has run perfectly for 10 years including the day it was brought to them but subsequent to an oil change is having this problem that it is never had before is because of poor maintenance.

Think I will be going elsewhere in the future.

You need to get your car to a 928 specialist. The TBF was common to your type of car, with your type of trans and torque tube. But - there could be a hundred other possibilities.
I wish you would look up TBF, and have that checked. It is catastrophic failure mode. New oil in the crankcase may not show anything on the dipstick, which is why I didn't mention checking the dipstick. If you read the test for TBF, it is not complicated, and can be done with instruction by any competent mechanic, this doesn't need to be done by a 928 guru(although that is best).
I'm not going to repost the method here, just search for it, and within a few minutes you should find the test method. Call around, and find someone who will take directions, and FOLLOW them carefully. Print out the test, hand it and the keys to a mechanic, and make SURE it is not TBF.
Not only that, but after checking the torque tube deflection, the pinch clamp is moved to the rear, and both front and rear pinch bolts should be replaced. Contact Roger at 928sRUS for the two bolts needed. This is an important job to do on any auto trans 928, and will provide peace of mind, as well as important damage avoidance in the future.

i took it to a recommended mechanic elsewhere.
When I went in to get the assessment he asks 'has this car been in storage?' I told him yes, it sat in the garage for the winter. He proceeds to tell me that mice had crawled into the air intake nozzle amd set up shop by the filter.
So apprarently when they did the oil change and checked the air filter it came dislodged and was sucking a ball of mouse house onto the intake screen!
removed amd now it runs great. Lol
now to put some mesh around the nozzles. Amd reportedly dryer sheets around the engine bay.
Going to have some other work done too. Glad it was nothong crazy.
