Default MAF Testing?

I did a few searches of the forum for procedures on testing the MAF for my '87 S4. I have it removed and have the ohmmeter in hand. Can anyone please give me the correct test procedure or point me to the forum thread or correct workshop manual section (my 24-20 talks about connectors 8,9 and 27 (old years?) when my AFM only has 6 pins - am I really mixed up?!?). Thanks.

And FWIW, I can highly recommend John's service. Very professional, fast and detailed in his error reports.

My MAF passed the simple test and didn't show any obvious signs of failure (I.e. no broken wires, dammaged connector or the like), but on closer inspection (by JDS) it turned out to be way out of spec.

I got a replacement in something like 4 days total (From I send the dammaged one till I had a re-calibrated unit, and that was over a weekend). Unfortunately the new MAF failed after about a month (apparently some kind of thermal prbl.), but again john showed great customer service and immediately send me a new one. And I mean IMMEDIATELY as in not even waiting for me to send the broken MAF back first.

The car has been running great since...

Thanks guys ! No wonder my ears were burning !

"Flott" - please note that the tests on my FAQ are for gross MAF failures only. A MAF has only to be 4% low on output for a cat equipped car for the car to fail to run properly. The only way to measure to that accuracy is with a properly calibrated air flow jig.

You haven't said why you are testing your MAF ?

Might check with Pro-M in Michigan....they can flow test the unit and give you the outputs...not sure i they have data on the S4s MAF or not, but it might be worth a shot.

Question I have a new one and cant get her running

I recently bought a new MAF for my 86.5. My old one was causing an idle seeking operation and lousy power under 4k RPM when cold.

I recently popped in the new one and I tried to start it but all it did was crank.
What does a MAF installler need to do before turning the ignition? Are there any other adjustments that need to be done?

Should be plug and play....there are no adjustments.

I did try disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes. I could smell raw gas coming out the tailpipe but all it did was crank the starter.

Warren,
There is a workshop manual procedure for the 86 cars to set idle mixture and idle speed. However, the car should have started OK.

With the version of LH ECU you have in your car, it doesn't have an "adaptation memory" like the S4 and later cars.

As long as the ingition is off, you can change the MAF without problems.

Your non start could be - bad connection to MAF, check the 6 way connector.

If the exhaust smells strongly of petrol, then the engine is flooded. You could try foot to the floor and crank until she fires.

Or leave it a couple of hours to dry out.

Good luck !

Default MAF

John S,

Thank you for the info. I think it may be shot - not much difference plugged in or out. At the very least I want to test it to make sure it is up to specs.

Questions (if you don't wish to answer in a public forum, just let me know and we can do it through PM):

How much would you charge to run a full diagnostics on my MAF (including approx. shipping and handling to/from NY)? What is the cost of fully refurbishing?

Do you sell the 6 pin connector that hooks onto the MAF (mine is worn and the wires may be bad) and if so, can they be spilced to the wiring harness without problems?

Thanks.

John,

Thanks for your help, its greatly appreciated.

I will try the foot to the floor technique and look up the idle mixture procedure.

Hi Flott,
I'll send you a PM, but for the record a fully refurbed MAF is $350, 2 year warranty.

I will check the calibration of your present MAF for a nominal charge, basically to cover the carriage costs.

John,

Is the $350 with or without a trade in?

What is the price if I just want you to refurbish the one I send you? (I can wait for it.)

Thanks.
