One of my "unknown miles and history" G28/03 trannys has a weird noise symptom... it howls, whines, and clatters on deceleration/engine braking only. Otherwise it sounds normal and even shifts properly, even the synchros work well.
It was full of new oil when I got it. I suspect someone tried to quiet it down with an oil change, it may have been run dry or abused or both before then. I know it has to be torn down but I'm curious as to what the tranny experts say is actually going on in there...I've never had one do this.
When I rebuilt my 03 transmission, I had 'whining' sound to it also. In my case, the needle bearings and main drive shaft were were badly pitted. Probably not the response you wanted but that's what I discovered.
